Why should it being American make you "unsure and wary?"

I've never been to Costco even though there was one five minutes away from me when I lived in Sydney.
What I would like is Aldi, love that. ..

If anyone's interested, we have Costco membership here in Australia and shop there regularly. Some things are great to buy in bulk (eg eggs, cheese, bread of all sorts, baking ingredients) but the VAST majority of what Costco sells is either electronics, clothes, or cheap very processed crap food. Some things eg fresh fruit and veg are more expensive than Aldi, which of course has no membership fee.
We are shortly getting Kaufland here, which is a membership-free alternative to Costco. So that should also be interesting to see how Costco will compete.

We don't have Aldi or anything remotely like it in NZ. I've seen Costco operating in the UK and wasn't impressed. Lots of stuff you don't need and a few bits you do.

I do like Aldi, we had it in Oz and I miss it sometimes, especially the cheap booze in Nsw (they don't sell that in Qld).
I can't even contemplate Costco with just me and my daughter, and I get overwhelmed with huge stores..the reason I've never been to Ikea!
Kmart is enough for me to deal with. I'm not a window shopper, I just go and leave as soonas possible.
