From an article in the Guardian.

It states that according to research carried out by Massey one in three New Zealanders drink dangerously throughout their entire lives. That this isn't something they grow out of.

So what can be done to alter the drinking culture prevalent here.

Hazardous drinking is established by a quantity or pattern of alcohol consumption that puts drinkers at risk of immediate harm (such as blackouts or hospitalisation) or long-term health issues
I'd add drinking that puts others at immediate risk, such as drunk drivers.

It is certainly 'alarming' (as TVNZ put it) to discover that there are people in their seventies still drinking hazardously.

There's just way too many kiwis don't know how to have a good time without getting trollied; at a recent school fundraiser there was an 'older' lady beside me who drank a bottle and a half of wine and proceeded to get more disgustingly loud, slurry and sweary. I believe it is in the Kiwi 'man up' / 'harden up' messages that promotes tolerance for drinking as a measure of toughness; if you don't drink to excess then clearly you must have something wrong with you.

It seems that most people I work with drink every day and are ripping into the wine as soon as they get home; they talk about having a booze free day as something really healthy and virtuous.

This actually made me giggle as it's so true. We've heard that often here. Husband hears it at the gym.

They refer to beer as "piss" which kinda gives a hint at the mentality
