Re: Oh I really miss !!!!!!
My Life! Not that it was anything fancy in England, but feels like it has been on hold since we arrived.
Wrapping christmas presents with the christmas lights on in the day snuggled in my warm house.
So Im off, will be back in time for my first winter christmas in 6 years. I tried, time to start living again. Im not at retirement age yet.

Yes. I make custard tarts for Mr BEVS. He prefers them the day after they have been baked. I would prefer he could go out and buy the blummin' things when he fancied one though. Baking custard tarts is not my idea of a fun time.

Re: Oh I really miss !!!!!!
Believe me its not for the lack of trying, but there's a certain depth of custard and thickness of pastry required that I just cannot recreate in the home baking environment. The silver foil case and neatly crimpled edges all add to the desired effect that the homemade version sadly cannot provide and the whole can't be arsedness that goes with that.
I like jam doughnuts and whole host of other bakery delights too, but really I think these are best left to the professionals.

top of the silver foil case, the way the custard, delicately browned, dips in the middle, drawing you in to its golden yellowy centre.
The way the custard wobbles ever so slightly when you put it down or the way the whole thing
squidges up when you take it out of the foil.......i could go on but the drool is clogging up my keyboard
Enough to fill a bath

Should I go and buy one from the local bakery, take a picture and post it?
I believe the term for this is genuinely - "Food Porn".

NZ custard tarts are an entirely different beast to the UK species, they need to be made with real eggs and the nutmeg on top makes all the difference.
I can live without them but every time I go to the UK I try to buy fresh baked pasties if I'm in the SW, Welsh Cakes in Wales and Eccles Cakes and proper Bakewell tarts if I'm up north. None of that Mr Kipling stuff either!

Its the subtle balance between crumbly yet ever so slightly moist pastry that peeps temptingly over the

The big question of the day, room temperature or cold? I remember the big custard tart debate when some new EU law said that they had to be kept in the fridge. I like a cold one myself.

Room temp for flavour, fridge for texture.
