Oh for a haggis
It's a winter thing but I'm trying to find a decent haggis. Our normally excellent butcher in Waikanae has failed the test. I've tried some well known makes but alas all so far have "peanut butter" syndrome or are too spicey.
I'll even pay to have it posted. Surely with the huge scottish influence in NZ there must be a maker of good haggis somewhere.
Would really appreciate a recommendation or two.

A bit far from you (but they may post) on Lunn Avenue in Mt Wellington (Auckland) there is "The English Butcher". They are run by a northerner and they have an excellent selection of british bangers - I'd be surprised if they didn't make their own haggis too.

We get ours from here
http://www.scotbake.co.nz/bakery.htm
also get rowies! super yummy!!
they'll courier anywhere as well.
From what I understand the haggis here can't be made in exactly the same way as in Scotland because of different rules regarding lungs -

We used to breed them back home. Thought about smuggling a pair in our container but I don’t think they would have survived the long journey without water and food. The squirrels got by okay though, went through a whole sack of nuts they did…. Worth the trouble though, our garden is full of the friendly fur-balls now. Seems the climate suits them here, maybe they will outbreed the possums given a few years.

Oh gosh, there we go with the word association and the power of advertising. You mention squirrels, I now have squirrel envy and immediately thought of squirrel shit. What's got a hazelnut in every bite? I really want a Topic.

Haggis......a different kind of spicyness (sp ?) Gotta have it with mashed tatties, swede and neeps. Having said that, I've had it once in my life !
