Default NZ or Oz where to go????

Posted this question on the Oz forum recently and just wondered if anyone in NZ has done the old recce in both Oz and Nz and has a take on this??? we are totally split down the middle between Melbourne and Blenheim, and you couldn't get two more different places..We are just those types of people who could fit really anywhere love the lakes and so much so we have had a caravan there for many a year. But also like our town life but not our town if you know what I mean!!!! we are drawing close to the flip of a coin on the stroke of midnight on new years eve to determin where we will see the next one in!!! My hubby really loved Blenheim but cost of living and wages really scare me so how do you manage??? we think our family will be better off in either place compared to where we live right now so any advice tips or comments may help sway us to a decision before we flip (the coin that is)!!! cheers lisa

You say you can fit in just about anywhere so I reckon a coin toss is your best way to go.

So, is it heads - Melbourne, tails - Blenheim?

Does 'material' quality of life (ie money) matter to you much? Not talking beauty, beaches, people etc - just money to buy things.

One clear winner: Aus.

GDP per capita 50% higher in Aus vs NZ.

^I heard 30%, could be you are correct about 50%, but yeah, more ducats in Aussie for the most part.

No money is not the great love of our life, the wages pay the bills and if we would struggle to do that and have a wee bit to flutter then I would worry and this is my concern. Looked great when I did the old £ to $ conversion. Then did a rough Nz wage and took off outgoings in $ and got a little scared...

Well according to the recent survey on this site, a higher % of Brit expats are ahppier in NZ than Aus

The weather in Melbourne is awful in my opinion. Either really hot or really cold. Blenheim is way more temperate.

Financially you would earn more in Melbourne, but its a big city, so to be expected.

Maybe the decider should be wether you want to live in a country full of of aussies or not.

Latest figures I've got are 2005:

Australia GDP per head US$21,000, in PPP 76.0
NZ GDP per head US$15,420, in PPP 56.9

So in GDP terms NZ was 27% worse off than Aus.
In PPP terms NZ was 25% worse off than Aus.

PPP is a better reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purchasing_power_parity

PPP life in Aus is 33% better in Aus than NZ.

Could have improved in NZ a fair bit in the last couple of years what with the increrase in value of soft commodities.

I live in Hawkes Bay, NZ but have a love affair with Australia. We have only visited Australia but have lived in NZ for nearly a year. My mother lives in NSW, Australia and loves it. The differences between the two countries that I notice are:
  • Australia is obviously wealthier- parks, public pools, libraries etc tend to feel better funded
  • I won't mention the weather because it's so varied throughout both Oz and NZ, but despite choosing one of the hotter areas of NZ, I think I would like even less winter and a more consistent summer- but that's a real horses for courses because you lose the greenery etc.
  • You are further removed from commercialism in NZ, which is sometimes a good thing but then sometimes frustrating when everything you want costs the earth or can't be found.
  • My understanding is that the aboriginal people of Australia have had an even harder time of it than the Maoris, which is just sooooo shameful. :curse:
  • Traveling around and exploring NZ is more doable
  • I happily let my children roam and explore in the countryside here in NZ- it would take me a while to reach that level of comfort in Oz!
  • Wages ARE lower in Oz than NZ, but that doesn't mean YOU will get a higher wage in Oz than NZ (we would).

Just a few thoughts

Interesting comments must hubby did totally fall for NZ. I do think I may be slightly put off with NZ and it must be said ever so slightly obsessed after reading lots of info on earthquakes....Funny because spiders, snakes and all that bites has'nt concerned me when considering OZ which most people seem to be worried about.

You may as well flip a coin, both places have their good and bad points.

At the end of the day the two locations aren't exactly a million miles apart and it's quite easy to move between the two if you fancy a change - its no big deal .

The only thing I would say is don't move to a place for its scenery, save that for your holidays.
