Default NZ Olympics

If there were an event for the most interesting aroma in a city, then I think Rotorua would win Gold.

Just a little fun, I'm sure there are other special place in NZ that have a uniqueness about them too.

Christchurch would be an odds on favourite for most Wilsons carparks.

Auckland would win for the most women driving 4 by 4's with a coffee to go in one hand and mobile phone in the other (whilst driving may I add).

I would award Gold to Auckland's biggest car park - otherwise known to my sat nav as EssArch-One (SH1).

Dunedin will definetly win most people claiming to be from a country they've never been to.

Hydrogen Sulphide (what gives Rotorua it's distinctive aroma) is lethal in high concentrations. You can only smell it at relatively low concentrations and as it rises, the olfactory glands are unable to detect it.
So if you can't smell it - get out quick!

some people can't smell it at all and others just get used to it.
odorant fade and olfactory fatigue are issues for sulphides and thiols but the concs causing damage are much much higher
used to work in a sulphur lab and the boss couldn't smell the H2S from his sink, he's about 80 now....

Exactly!

The smell is only noticeable in a couple of places in the CBD.

Can't smell it at all in the residential areas.
