Or self sufficiency. I have a friend who grew up in Northland. Father brought home the fish for dinner to their generator run house that could be reached only by boat. Cold showers only - but she turned out alright. And she always brought delicious seafood back with her whenever she went home for the holidays.
Lovely part of the country. Just gotta get that job or be rich enough to enjoy it.

Yes it is. Looks the place for us. We can buy outright and can go anytime as we are English but Aus Citizens (in UK at mo - can't wait to leave again) We want to set up permaculture (posh word for growing your own and catching yer own) and maybe set up a small business perhaps with horse-trekking, bnb, do a bit of voluntary work / part time job and try and integrate nicely - possibilities seem good for that don't they? It looks a better climate than a lot of NZ and has no snakes and ticks to kill the dog! What ya say?

East Northland is good, west Northland is bad (as far as most NZ'ers are concerned) which is why your money goes a lot further on property on the west coast but might rule it out for your business ideas.

Not sure. Probably due to transport/ infrastructure in the past but not so true nowadays. West has also got great beaches, scenery etc but east has got all the best towns, tourist spots, more people.

Fair enough but even the more crowded bits on the east (Bay of Islands, Whangarei, W Heads etc, coast around Warkworth) are not THAT crowded.
Your money certainly goes very far indeed on the west coast (property) and climate is great.

Don
Did you mention in another post that you also liked Gisborne ? It's a possibility too for us. What did you like about it?
