NZ Immigration & Asperger's Syndrome
A little while ago we submitted our ITA. We have received an email to say that our son's medical certificate has been referred to the NZ ministry of Education for assessment. We have read that others with a child with this condition have been granted residency when we did our research about half a year ago. We hope things will work out for us too.
Does anybody know if all Asperger's children will be allowed in or has anybody been denied residency because of the potential cost to the NZ economy?
Does anybody know how long the NZ ministry of education takes to provide NZ immigration with the requested information?

Hi Mr Ed,
I know of several cases of families with AS /mildly autistic kids that have been allowed in, some with PR. Be prepared to get very thorough reports for your son.
And if you post on this forum for a 3rd time, you'll be able to read the private message I'm about to send you (more details).

Thank you for your reply. We have submitted the full diagnosis report with the medical certificate as well as a letter written by my son's consultant. I would like to think that it will answer any questions the NZ ministry of Education might have.

I wouldn't be so worried if i were you! Our son has Aspergers and we had no issues what so ever with our ITA application. We wasn;t even in the end asked to provide anything extra to what the doctor had written within the medical examination. This was in January when we submitted out application...

Thank you for your post, Simonmarkellis! Do you know if your son's medical was referred to the ministry of education for assessment?
Kind regards, Edwin.

Nope didn't need a referral at all. We had everything already, doctors reports, school reports and wasn't asked for them...

Re: NZ Immigration & Asperger's Syndrome
If MRED's child is deemed likely to need 1 to 1 support in a mainstream classroom in NZ or is currently receiving that in the UK, they are less likely to grant visas than for a child with a diagnosis but with a history of coping in the mainstream environment. It's not even just about the dollars, it's also about the shortage of special needs staff.
No doubt if NZ really really wanted you...i.e. you were an oncologist headed for Wellington, the possible costs of granting visas would be made up for by the benefit to NZ.
Good luck with it....I understand how stressful the visa process can be even without these issues.

Re: NZ Immigration & Asperger's Syndrome
I have read that it does depend on ORRS funding. However, the level of assistance required would likely make a difference.
The interesting thing is that we (mostly my wife) teach our children at home, including our son with Aspergers, and we intend to carry on with this in NZ. So what is being looked at is if he would qualify for ORRS funding in mainstream school, although we plan to save the NZ economy some money by looking after our children's educational needs ourselves.
Still, I appreciate that NZ immigration looks at the fact that we would have the right to put our children in mainstream school and that our son might then qualify for ORRS funding.
