hang around Ruapehu though and you may at least see things gargling away. The last lahar was what, year before last? 2008?

It is a really strange trait of human nature how we like to toy with the idea of a complete destruction and annihilation. In the medieval times there were a lot of doom-mongers telling people to repent or there will be the end of the world. Strangely enough, in these modern times we still like to dwell in the thoughts of complete wipeout whether it is by some volcanic eruption like the Yellowstone one or if it is some meteorite colliding with Earth.
I have read somewhere that the next big one from the space hitting Earth will happen around the year 2800, in 800 years time. A similar kind of meteorite which killed off the dinosaurs millions of years ago.
