Nursing question
Asking on behalf of a friend with 22 years UK nursing experience - lately within oncology. She qualified all those years ago with a Diploma, and now of course it's all Degrees. Is it possible she could still get a job here? Thanks in advance xx

Re: Nursing question
Best people to ask are the Nursing Council of New Zealand. They will probably say that all applications are assessed individually. If the world is fair she should be okay, but I can't say for sure.

Re: Nursing question
It does state "A relevant recognised qualification which is at, or above, the qualification level on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. The qualification must correspond to the skill level indicated for that occupation in the Australian New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO)
OR
The relevant work experience that the ANZSCO indicates may substitute the required qualification
OR
The relevant requirements specified in the Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) for your occupation (if your occupation is included in the LTSSL)
OR
Five years of relevant work experience".
so as Laura says maybe contact the Nursing Council

Re: Nursing question
Yes.
My wife was trained via Ormskirk School Of Nursing at the Diploma level. Never done a degree and she gained nursing registration here and jobs easily enough.

Re: Nursing question
Australia and NZ have mutual recognition of registration. Australia is no longer registering non degree trained nurses and, as far as i know, NZ are the same.

Re: Nursing question
Yes maybe, however experience years post diploma qualification should be accepted in lieu of the degree qualification.
There can't just be a blanket rule that says only degree qualified nurses are accepted as it would rule out everyone prior to the UK Project 2000 programme and similar programmes all over the world.
Pretty stupid having a shortage of the skill then constraining the possibility of employing nurses even further by moving the goalposts.

NZ also changed the rules in 2013 and now require qualifications equivalent to level 7 (batchelor degree).
Further study will only help if it is at the right academic level.

Re: Nursing question
Confusing then as I knew of a UK diploma trained nurse that was refused NZ registration unless she underwent further study/training. However, I suppose that would not preclude a diploma trained nurse from picking up a job offer. She would perhaps simply not be seen as fully NZ qualified to the standard set.
The NZ nursing council state this
NZIS peg the standard as
For some reason I thought nurses were furthering their diplomas to degree level prior to 2000. I seem to remember a psychiatric nurse friend of mine doing this along with several others she worked with.
The NZ nursing council state this
International applicants must have a nursing qualification that
- is equivalent to level 7 (in New Zealand this is a bachelors degree) on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (see www.nzqa.govt.nz for more information).
- full time study for a minimum of 3 years, completed within 5 years of first enrolment.
- meet the education standards for the registered nurse programme in New Zealand.
- Nursing qualification must be authorised by the nursing regulatory authority and accredited and monitored by national education authority and nursing regulator.

The situation here is that Diploma trained UK nurses are being refused registration and advised to undertake further study
Many have simply given up and the amount of interest on the nursing section of this site has declined enormously
There are lots of threads about this on the nursing section.
Due to the Trans Tasman mutual recognition agreement both countries will have the same requirements. It seems that individuals will have to apply and see what happens....but , if the experience of many is anything to go by, it does not look promising.

Unfortunately it would - without NZ registration they could only work as a care giver.
You can only work as a nurse in NZ if you are registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand. It is an offense to claim to be an RN and do RN duties if you are not an RN.
