nursing job shortage? really?
hi
apparently there is now a shortage of nursing posts in nz due to recession, and people either taking up nursing or going back into nursing as its thought to be more secure a job.
has anyone seen a drop in positions and does this mean it will be off the skilled list?

Hi Jenny
I can't say I have noticed that. If you go on to the relevant District Health Board Sites, there are plenty of jobs advertised. Some areas more than others.
Plenty jobs here too http://www.tonix.co.nz

When I was offered my job I was told I could pick where I wanted to work within the hospital because there were so many vacancies.

Security of job brings more back to nursing
4:00AM Wednesday May 13, 2009

New Zealand's chronic nursing shortage is almost over - thanks to the recession.
District health boards say vacancy rates have fallen as former nurses return to make up lost family income and young people turn to nursing for secure jobs.
The Auckland board has no nursing vacancies in its emergency department and two in its admissions and planning unit.

The shortages have definitely eased off, Waikato announced a while back that in fact they had too many:
News report today:

They do however say that there are still critical shortages for mental health nurses.

Counties-Manukau has two or three vacancies in emergency care - a big improvement on figures recently.
At the Waitemata board, acting chairman Max Abbott said: "We have for the first time almost full employment in the emergency and acute admissions areas."
"Midwifery is still an area of a lot of vacancies, but in nursing we now have more applicants than places. We had more than 600 applicants for 110 nursing places this year. Going back two years we were scratching to have 100 people apply," he said.
"It's because people see the health and teaching professions as more secure than some others."

Yeah, it is most definitely a growth industry with no shortage of clients.
Seems now it's the recession that's to blame and one in four of us is going to end up unemployed, depressed, mentally ill, suicidal, with drug and alcohol problems.

Recession mental health warning
A mental health expert is warning of a tidal wave of mental health problems as the recession deepens.
Mental Health Commission chairman Peter McGeorge said yesterday that a quarter of all New Zealanders could develop mental health problems as the recession deepens.

I know there are patches of the north island and some smaller hospitals that have no openings, but the majority of DHB's do not advertise vacancies on a regular, they like people to send in their CV or phone them

Yes, I honestly think as a nurse looking to move to NZ you should choose your ideal place and then sharpen up your CV and approach the DHB. You never know and if there's nothing then you can consider waiting or looking elsewhere but I wouldn't be dictated in the first instance by which DHB apparently has vacancies.

I'm a Kiwi RN currently working outside of my profession but if things get tough I will be back nursing like a shot. I also have colleagues overseas who are coming or considering returning home due to the worldwide recession.

Give it until 2010 and everyone will be heading to Austalia in search of a better rate of pay. A dedicated person in the medical profession, especially with experience will almost always find a job TBH.

All right maybe 2020 if the government doesn't do a bit of tax and spend with peoples money to get some economically productive projects underway .
The point is that in the end the net migration of NZ qualified people is outwards and that is as long term trend that won't stop without solving the underlying issues. That isn't an overnight fix.

But I wouldn't panic and make predictions like that as many of us also come back.
In fact right now each day at work we get requests for employment potential from Kiwi's living overseas.
They tend mostly to be in the UK, some from the USA and they odd one from elswhere. Over the last two months more and more are coming from Aus.
The big plus for professions such as nursing is that you always have your registration and will always get work.
