Nurse's shift patterns in Auckland

Can any nurses out there tell me what the normals shifts are please? I work 3 long days per week here in UK at the moment 07:00-21:00.
I like these hours because a) I get 4 days off per week and b) I miss out on the peak traffic :D

These hours are pretty standard across the country as far as I know. We work the same hours down in Rotorua except our nights finish at 7.15am. ;)

Oooh, not keen on those! It does differ slightly between wards at my hospital but shifts are generally the early shift is 07.30-14.30, late shift is 12.30-21.00, nightshift 20.30-08.00.

I've been looking at working at Northshore hospital but there aren't any suitable jobs going for me at the moment but there are always jobs at Auckland City hospital. I checked both locatons on Google maps and it only takes 5 minutes more to drive to Auckland City hospital (from Birkdale).
However, I mentioned this to my brother and he said I'd definitely be stuck in rush hour traffic!

It only takes me 15 minutes to drive to work at the mo and the last thing I want is to move over to NZ and be stuck in traffic!

some places / wards do long 12 hour shifts.
have a look at southern cross, they do quite a few private sector hospitals

What's your speciality ?

I work at CMDHB and the hours are the same as RobDon's - plus 12 hour shifts aren't the norm.

My speciality is ENT and Maxillofacial although we do get other surgical cases on our ward regularly. I've only got 17 months post qualified experience so am looking at state hospitals really.

I live in Torbay (North end of the North Shore)and leave at 6.30am in the morning I work at the Med school (opp Auckland Hospital) I am always in work for 7am!. if I caught the bus it would be 7.15am! I leave no later than 4.15pm and are always home after picking my son up at 5pm if not before
leaving at 3/3.30 you would not have a problem unless your journey takes you past a school!
Please the traffic in Auckland is heavy but not as bad as busy UK roads even at 8.30am I still manage my journey in 45mins!

If you work at Auckland City Hospital & work the ordinary shifts, then parking becomes an issue. You have to park in Newmarket for an Early shift & then get the hospital shuttle from there :frown:. I used to work 12hr shifts there for that reason (& to save on petrol ;)). I think ACH is a much nicer place to work than NSH. The latter makes my skin crawl, I found it to be rather dirty & I wasn't impressed with the staff I met on the 3 occasions I've had to go there.

Anything going at Waitakere? Much quicker to get there with the new motorway & has a lovely feel to the place.

Thanks Vitalstatistix, I'll look into it. My brother splits his placement between Northshore and Waitakere hospitals so I'll see what he thinks.
I'm waiting for my IELTs results before I apply to the nursing council, and my house has just been put back on the market (after new kitchen & bathroom). I'm hoping things will start moving now :fingerscrossed:

The Auckland DHBs do each have their own specialties so if you want to do something in particular you'll probably best to find whichever hospital specialise in that area. As you will have seen based on advertised jobs, this would be Auckland City for the more interesting and complex stuff. Middlemore has the national burns centre. Auckland has Starship for Children etc.

North Shore doesn't appear do much major surgery and is very lo-tech, catering for general outpatients and the everyday basic needs: they're more into mental Health and aged care as befitting the needs of the local majority no doubt.

Specialist outpatient appointments and surgeries are referred to either Auckland or the Green Lane Super Cinic.

Waitakere is even less so as it is always in the local rag going on about the inadequacies and unmet need for hospital services in the West. Not sure where they are at right now, but until quite recently were closed overnight which they had been forever promising to rectify, then delaying and making excuses for the lack of 24 hour opening. I believe it may have moved on pre-election, as it was a political hot potato for a good while.

I would like to stay with ENT and maxfax surgery as it's so interesting and varied, and I deal with tracheostomies & laryngectomies, really specialist stuff. I don't want to lose these skills.
There was a vacancy a few weeks ago for a head and neck nurse at Auckland City hospital and I was gutted that I couldn't apply for it!

I work in plastics and max fax at CMDHB, but we dont specialise in ENT. so no tracheostomies or laryngectomies, I'm afraid. Just keep looking as jobs are coming up all the time. :D

Thats counties Manakau Trish which is in the south of auckland ......not far from the airport. You'll just have to wait and see what pops up after you're in the position to apply. I spoke to a few nurses over the last few days and theyre all of the opinion that there are always jobs popping up.

what shifts are you on this week? Im off over the weekend if you want to skype
