Northland tourism
What's the tourism business like north of Auckland? is it thriving or is it slow? do you have busy shops that hire bikes, kayaks etc etc and do they open year round or summer only?

Re: Northland tourism
Lots of outdoor activity shops north of Auckland most that I see are open 12/12.
If your thinking more of business's that offer activities it seems to be the same situation.
Kiwis are a hardy bunch and don't tend to let the seasons effect their weekend outdoor activities.
I'm only just North of Aux in Whangaparaoa but it seems to be the same when I go a little further north.
I haven't been to the far north (only as far as whangarei) so cant comment on the situation up there.

Compared to where, for example? There's only one place where it could be said to be a 'thriving' where there's any major critical mass and that's at Paihia which is full of hotels / motels and backpacker places. Maybe 90 mile beach Ahipara / Kaitaia way but I would say this would be slow but steady stream of campervanners and those on the tourist trail. Many tourists are on either on strict whistle-stop tours on coaches and no time to themselves for leisure acivities, or will stick within spitting distance of the Naked Bus / Kiwi Experience bus stops; so best look to see where their pick ups and drop offs are, if you want to tap into the mainstream Lonely Planet backpacker mob.

Re: Northland tourism
Thanks for the replies. I've not visited NZ yet, been to OZ so I might be trying to compare to what I've seen there, dunno
I'm just wondering how many tourists venture further north than Auckland looking for kitesurfing, kayak, sup, jet ski hire and lessons, rather than a more relaxed sightseeing, boozy foody camper type trip. Do people book trips to the bay of islands or the far north for the kiting etc etc or is it dolphin tours only?
We've been kiting in the north sea in 4ºc lately, not too many people want a lesson when the wind chill is -10ºc though!
