Question North or South? No arguing please!

We are at the very first stages of applying for jobs and visas. We just can't decide where to go, Christchurch or Auckland.....
Anybody got a list of pros and cons that may help us along?
We don't want to start a "We're better than you" war, but any info is helpful info!

Hi Caroline,
It depends what you are looking for in your move to NZ.
South is cheaper than north, well as in Christchurch v Auckland

The basic facts about these places can be found doing an internet search. Apart from that, the pros and cons depend on the type of person you are and what you want in life.

You could always do what quite a few people do and settle on Wellington, as it's in the middle.

I assume you mean property, as nothing else is cheaper !!

If you are looking for the city life and the buzz that goes with it, then Auckland will be for you. On the other hand if you want a smaller city life with lovely beaches and great scenery, skiing in winter and a city which is very English, then Christchurch is the place. Its very important that you pick the right place, it makes a big difference on how you feel when you arrive and how well you settle. A friend of mine went to Wellington and hated it, they were all for going home then decided to try Christchurch and have settled in really well now and are glad they made the move. Best of luck with your choice.... its all New Zealand after all.

Hi! we think the north because we really don't care about skiing, and want as much sunshine as we can get without burning!
It's only an opinion, but we are getting a picture of the north as having a bit more in the way of 'lively' = someone who said Auckland was closer to their former life in Edinburgh; and whether or not you want to live in a city, you could at least know where the concerts/plays/etc are if you want them? The other impression given on these forums is that people in the north have a little bit more money?
if you look at the 'Really useful thread' there are links to websites where you can see not only temperatures, but also area profiles which show the average earnings per household, etc and that must say something about the job situation, and what people could hope to earn?

As above, the costs are generally the same except for housing. Auckland is more than others. As for livelier...c'mon this is New Zealand, right? There's not going to be that much difference between Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland when it comes to urban amenities.
I've lived in both Auckland and Christchurch. I prefer Christchurch 'cos it's easier to get around.

It can be slightly warmer in Auckland but they get more rain than Christchurch, its getting into the sub-tropical area up there. The ozone is as bad in Auckland as in Christchurch too, they are about the same distance as Glasgow is to London, you will get burnt here if you dont wear sunscreen, the sun is very strong when its out.

Amen to that....

However I've just checked the local by-laws and have discovered that, as a person living in Wellington, I have to drone on about having the Ballet here...Opera....more sunshine than London......more cafes than New York.....te papa.....2nd largest wooden building in the world....drone....drone......

Anyway...doesn't Christchurch have that special wind that makes people go crazy?

South has a quarter of the [population, but apparently, nicer scenery.
So-North has more people-but still enough to see and do,South is prettier, but with less population. Depends what you are looking for.

Those Northwesterlies...yup. Those can put a tiny minority on edge.

But you're in Wellington. You'd be very educated about wind I'd think.

Xchurch - Pro's

Close to scenic areas.
Ski fields
Cheaper housing
Good proximity to surf spots
Less populated
Great biking roads

cons

Colder,
Poluted in winter thru fires etc
weirder people (true - more bogans)
seems quieter
smaller job market

Auck

Pro's
More diversity
Bigger job market
better nightlife
Warmer
Good beaches (piha etc)

cons
Over populated
traffic problems
rains a lot
mozzies in summer
expensive housing
no heart, but plenty of groovy suburbs (aka ponsonby)

Surely having the second largest something ain't that clever? Which building is that? Your house maybe?
