No pets in rentals at harcourts!
The manager at Harcourts in Hamilton has told me they have NO rental properties that will accept dogs! Is that really the case? New Zealand is a pet friendly country I hope! Anyone else had trouble (or did I catch her on a bad day?).

You may have to hunt high and low to find a rental that will accept pets. It can be done but it's not easy. My sis in law got a property to rent which took her and her husband and their 3 kids plus their 2 cats, albeit in Auckland which is too far from Hamilton. It wasn't a main stream letting agent, just a guy with a small portfolio but everything was above board and worked out ok.
Just remember, other letting agents are available. Maybe Harcourts consider it just, 'too difficult' to let a house to someone with pets. Like I said, shop around, don't give up hope, it can be done.

it helps if you offer, more rent say $50 per week and have carpets cleaned by a cleaning firm, that's what we did, with two cats

We rented a house simply because it was the only one in the area to allow our dog.

Found one!

Ask the agent to contact owner, offer bigger bond and have carpets cleaned at end on tenancy.
Dog ownership in ChCh is one of the highest in NZ, however finding a landlord that will allow dogs is very difficult. After watching Renters on tv, I think dogs are the least of their problems!
In all honesty, the bond is normally quite a large sum and would more than cover some scratched paintwork or cleaning carpets if needed. Dogs don't normally make holes in walls, leave furniture to rot in gardens or smash up the house, all problems landlords face from their human tenants

When I moved over in 2004 I had no trouble finding several in T.A. that would allow dogs.

As mentioned before it's not usual for rentals to allow dogs. Probably because there might be a noise problem or inconvenience to other neighbours. They normally say that cats are okay. And now that the rental market is so tight it may be even more difficult to find a place. We've lived in a number of rentals here and never seen anyone around who had a dog.

As soon as your OH starts work get him to bring up the subject in a friendly way with his work colleagues. They may be able to offer local suggestions. It often happens that way here, through word of mouth. A fellow dog lover would love to help.

Not had a problem renting with our 2 cats, but dogs seem to be a big no-no almost everywhere.

Re: No pets in rentals at harcourts!
The house we applied for said no dogs. I told the agent she was a quiet, well behaved dog and young children would be likely to do more damage, I asked them to check with the owners, that we would put right any damage the dog did and get the carpets cleaned when we left. Frankly the dog did no damage and the teenagers did.
Most ads will say no pets, but as they say if you don't ask the answer is always no.
Good luck

Thanks for your help everyone. Can't believe it is so difficult! We want to be out in the rural area near the airport so hopefully something will come up. The OH starts work in may and has somewhere to lodge until the dogs and I arrive in August. Hoping when he gets his feet on the ground he will be able to have more luck face to face!

Agree with the others, get the agent to ask the house owner.
We are renting out our house and did say no pets but informed our agent on the quiet that we would be willing to accept on a case by case basis. It was more to make sure we didn't end up with multiple large breeds living there as opposed to an easy going Cavalier King Charles! Our current renters have a cat Just the way it turned out but we would have said yes to a dog depending on the circumstances.

Re: No pets in rentals at harcourts!
When we first rented in Chch our landlord wouldn't even let us have a cat, but after being there for 6 months and proving that we were good tenants he actually agreed to let us have a dog, provided we made good any damage and had the carpets professionally cleaned when we left. That was 3 years ago and now landlords have so many potential tenants they can pick and choose.
On the other side of the coin I actually work for Harcourts (albeit actually selling rather than involved in renting) but I would have thought that the letting agent should be able to ask the owner on a case by case basis. A lot of different agencies advertise 'no pets' as standard but it can be negotiable.
Good luck with your move )

Re: No pets in rentals at harcourts!
Thanks kiwi connections.. My sister has just bought in Canterbury through Harcourts! The letting agent for harcourts in hamilton just sent a three word reply to my application 'no dogs sorry'. I thought it was a bit rude so asked his manager to get in touch. She just said 'we have no properties that would accept dogs and good luck finding one..'. I thanked her for not being helpful and assured her that when I am settled and am looking to buy I will not bother her again!
I mean, I don't want to fall out with anyone, but a bit of help would have been nice... Made me feel we weren't welcome in hamilton!
