What about Waverley? Lovely safe suburb with a great view over the harbour. I'd also recommend the suburbs over the southern motorway like Brighton, Fairfield, Green Island or Abbotsford. St Clair is nice as well, near the beach but can be a bit pricy.

I'd avoid certain parts of South Dunedin (Musselborough, Caversham, Corstephine). Also avoid North D like the plague as it's full of students even Northeast Valley is a bit of a dump.

Plus, I thought I'd make it clear to the non Dunedin people. When we refer to South Dunedin and North Dunedin it sounds like we're ruling out half of the city. Just so you know, North Dunedin and South Dunedin are suburbs and not entire areas.

South Dunedin = Benefits Street
North Dunedin = ASBO Central

Oh come on it's still part of the greater south Dunedin area and some parts are a bit dodgy.

I would completely disagree with this but I guess it's a personal thing. The Waverley/Andersons Bay/Tainui/Musselburgh area is really nice for families and there are a lot of good schools. We had 5 primary schools to choose from in this area.
