Default Nice Family Friendly Areas in Dunedin?

Hi can anyone give me an idea of areas in Dunedin that can be suited to Families?

Other things like public transport, house prices (not over $400,000), sun would also be a factor.

cheers, Grant

It depends on what your priorities are. Do you prefer close to schools, close to town, close to beaches, away from town?

As long as you stay away from the Student area in North Dunedin and maybe stay away from South Dunedin the entire city is family friendly.

If you see something you like online just send me a PM and I'll give you an honest answer.

Don't mind being on the outskirts or outside town, say within 30min commute. Near decent school would be a bonus also. cheers

You've got a huge area to look at as a 30 minutes commute opens up many areas from Brighton in the South to Warrington in the North.

There's so many beautiful areas and so many good schools I can't really list them.

You might be better off looking at houses first then see if the area suits you, 400k will get you a very nice pad in a very nice area. There's not one area in and around Dunedin that a budget like that won't get you a good house in.

Maori Hill? Would struggle to get a decent house for 400k there, no?

I've never understood why there's an attraction to Maori Hill by all the snobs in Dunedin, there's much nicer places around the city. But even though it's a bit snobby there's still plenty of normally priced houses up there, not all the streets are big posh places.

My advice, if you come to Dunedin move into a beautiful area by the beach, you're spoilt for choice and for the price of an Auckland dog kennel you'll find a lovely house in a safe area, close to good schools and no traffic.

We like the look of St Clair and Port Chalmers,
Any plus or negatives for those areas

St Clair is lovely, it's a desirable area so the house prices might be slightly inflated especially if you're up on the hill overlooking the sea not so much if you're on the flat. If you're on the hill you lose the sun hours before the rest of us but the views are breath taking. St Clair is at one end of a 5km beach, we live at the other end with views over towards St Clair.

I do like Port Chalmers, it has a nice feel about it. It's just the huge port being there might put some people off. There's a few good boozers though. During the summer it must be bizarre living in Port as when the cruise ships turn up thousands upon thousands of tourists invade the place.

Was in paper today that average Maori Hill house price has broken through $500k, so almost certainly there will be some "OK" houses for around $400.

In my view Maori Hill is about $100k overpriced compared to the other more sought after hill suburbs of Roslyn and Belleknowes.

Agreed. But "OK" is not the same as "decent", especially not when applied to NZ's housing stock.

But isn't OK or decent a relative term for the potential buyer
to weigh up when considering the price, condition and location
of a property.

I have friends in Fairfield who come to Cambridge and think we
all live in sumptuous luxury, I also have friends up at Narrow Neck beach
who would struggle to find a property here they would be comfortable in.
Its relative and probably a discussion for another thread
