Oh yeah and there's the kereru - NZ pigeon. They're huge!

The last one's an oystercatcher - not in our garden!!

Great pictures - thanks Rob! And I must ask, what is the big green thingy perched on someone's wrist???

Oystercatchers - fab! Love 'em!

Hubby will be delighted (NOT!) to hear that you have wood pigeons - he hates their noise!!!

I shall have to buy a good bird guide when we arrive!

2 books that you might find helpful. 1) The hand guide to the birds of NZ (ISBN 0-14-028835-x). 2) Feild guide to nz wildlife (ISBN 1-86950-300-7)

Looks like a 'Preying Mantis' they are quite comman in some areas, our last house had loads in the garden, and quite often find them in the house.

We have all the usual suspect birds as per Southerners list plus stick insects. Can't seem to find a bird seed that is popular among the little sods so have half bags of about 4 kinds Tui's, silvereyes and bellbirds like sugar syrup in pots in the trees. 14 tuis in the garden is the record up to now

It's a praying mantis - it was riding on top of the lawnmower!

The pigeons are quite rare - they're a protected species too. You don't or hear see them that often where we live. They make an amaziing noise when flying - kind of a whoop whoop whoop - freaky when they go over your head and surprise you!

This shows how big they are:
