New Zealand and Forum Virgins
Hi Everyone
We the Harper family and not only virgins to the idea of moving to NZ, but also forums, so please be gentle with us.
We are hoping to move to NZ as soon as possible by getting sponsored by a company based in Auckalnd.
I know what all you experts and old hands are now thinking, "They havent got a clue, ASAP, more like if possible"
So this is why we are coming to you all for help in cutting through the crap of the NZ legal paperwork and trying to get away with not paying some agency in the uk for money for old rope.
I work at the head office of a major supermaket based in London in the e-commerce home shopping area, and am looking at working for a retailer in NZ.
Does anyone know of contact at Woolworths or Foodtown. They are owned by Progressive Enterprises, based in Auckland.
If sponsored, what are the realistic timescales of getting out to NZ for a a new way of life.
We have two children aged 18 months and 5 and a half.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts and insights

Welcome and lots of luck with your application - unfortunately cant help you with your question but Im sure someone will be able to - the other thing you can do in the meantime while this happens is to do a search on NZ on this site as there are quite a few going and are at various stages of the process - so do a search and should come up with something that is of relevance to you.

I don't know about your particular occupation but some may require approval or the employer may have to prove that they have tried to fill the vacancy locally.
You should check out all of the rules and options at the NZIS site (http://www.immigration.govt.nz).
You need to be realistic about finding work in NZ, whilst living in the UK. Unless you have very specialist skills, many employers may not want to consider you until you are in NZ. That shouldn't put you off, though.

If you get a proper job offer, you can get a work permit through NZIS London in a very short time, (say) 2 weeks is on the generous side, more like a day or 2. Also, if you submit your PR app with a job offer, turnaround is pretty quick - couple of posters this week got their PR approved in a week though I think 6 weeks or so has been more normal. NZIS could be speeding up to hit their year end (June) targets.

Hi everyone, and thanks for your replies
Things are going ok at the moment, having made contact with a company in NZ on Friday night.
We are going to the emmigration show in York on Friday, so hope to get some useful help and understanding of whether we really could get enough points if I get a job offer.
Some questions you may be able to help with
1. How long do the medical checks take to come through, from making an appointment, to attending and then recieving the ok. Should we request them now.
2. We have requested our police checks now, they are valid for 3 months. Will that be long enough.
3. If I do get a job in Auckland I will be working just outside Wiri, near the airport. Any recommendations on a place to live. Ideally would like a 4 bed house with some land. Happy to commute a little, although I believe most peple in NZ dont commute.
4. When does school term start for my daughter who is 6 in October?
Think thats it for now, although there will be loads more coming through as we move along this journey.
We are very excited about it all, but need some reassurance that it can happen and we will get enough points, and hopefully we will get that at the show in York.

2. Police checks have to be within time limit on the day your app is lodged.

You seem very confident about getting a job offer. You said you simply made contact with an NZ company. Obviously there is more to it than that. What do you do?

Thanks for the info. The police checks are already in the post and I will try and book the medicals on Tuesday.
I work as an e-commerce manager for online shopping. This is on the list for ITANZ, and I have already had an itital chat with a company in Auckland. My CV is winging its way to them tonight for them to pick up in the morning.
I am not confident at all, but want to ensure I have all my bits ready incase we do strike lucky and I get a job offer.
I have the bonus that I am being made redundant at the end of August, so have some time to sort things out, sell the house and have a lump sum to fall back on.
I am sure there is still loads we dont know or havent planned for, but are working as hard as we can to get everything right.
I am hopeful that the show in York next weekend will help us understand most of the issues and timings.
Cant say I am looking forward to the medical with the old cough and drop and a blood test.
Cheers
Paul

Good luck with the job. A completely different situation but I had an initial telephone interview with a development manager and then a face-to-face tech interview with a guy they had that was working over here. That was it though (not really sure why). I have to start over but the application is going in on Tuesday.
I understand that an application with a job offer (or adding a job offer later) can bring the processing time on applications down to a matter of weeks, if you want to move that quickly.

What work do you do, and what job have you aplied for.
When are you hoping to move out to NZ.
Do you have a family and where are you looking to live.
What are the costs for the medicals. There will be my wife, myself and my two children.
CV ust sent over to a company in Auckland, so fingers crossed.
Off to bed, its been a long day, and I have our third car boot to do to sell more stuff, which is actually all crap. Made £300 last week in two days. Its amazing what people will buy.

I'm a software developer, emigrating with my wife and 2 "kids". I'm prepared to move this year but, ideally, we would move as a family after my daughter's GCSEs next summer.
As for location, we don't much mind. Wellington would be central (for exploring NZ) but just about anywhere on the North Island would do, even parts of the South Island.

Phoned up for medical prices and they appear to be the standard;
Adult £120 + 71 for x-rays, Children £65, no x-ray required.
Earliest appointment is 16th June, but will wiat until we know more on the job front.

Where do you find out places that do the family medicals/X-rays?
They're valid for 3mths I believe.

On the NZIS site you select the area you live in and then call the doctor direct.
You are right that they are only valid for 3 months.
Also they are non transferrable if you were considering trying for another country.
Where and when are you planning to go?
