Default Is New Zealand a 3rd World Country

Sometimes it feels like it, what do your think?

Poverty is one reason

Broadband connection another

I am sure there are many others for and against

House insulation and heating standards?

But no it isn't a third world country, not by a long shot.

The longer I stay here the more crap I see. I think NZ is not going the 'right' way. I want my kids to have citizenship if only so they have a life in Oz if they don't chose Europe. I would hate for them to be 'stuck' here. Oz offers waaay more opportunities for the future..so long as there's enough water for everyone in the coming years. NZ may be better from that point of view. So they will have a great career but will wilt into oblivion through lack of water. I'll get my coat.

Its probably because you chose space over location and now you live in a shit suburb.

New Zealand has no career opportunities and has been like that decades did this miss you?

Not sure where you live but Wellington is great for me, I have Broadband and it works, I have an insulated house and central heating.

I think the problem is I need to find other things to complain about, I'll post when I find them.

There is one option, you could always leave NZ and head home.

Exactly! We also have decent broadband and good heating and insulation - but that's because we made the effort, got them done and spent the money.

Maybe Wellington's more civilised than other parts of NZ?

I wouldn't say a third world country either but I am feeling more unsettled now after 3 + years than ever, just wondering now that I have lived here could I do it again somewhere new. Must be watching too much of A place in the sun on UK tv!! Europe calls to me but at our age I think we are kind of stuck now!!

We have a nice warm insulated house in a nice suburb on the south island out of chch but even I am wondering what the North would be like if we could afford to relocate and find a job! Maybe that is the answer to getting bored here! Maybe I just need a holiday

Ditto here for great broadband and a warm house

I think the only conclusion to be drawn from people saying NZ is a 3rd world country, is that they have probably never visited a 3rd world country

It,s not exactly third world but it is way behind in attitudes, there is a huge divide between the have,s and have not,s I think the place needs another 10 million people to become viable but it will never be allowed to happen

Err, thanks for surmising I live in a shite suburb and chose size over location..you are talking utter bollocks. I say that as you know nothing of my living arrangements..or do you? I thought not. I happen to live in a wonderful neighbourhood and an equally wonderful house thank you.

I was talking about the country as a whole. Palmerston North is not the best location in NZ I think we all know that but we happen to live a good life here bereft of all the crap we suffered locally in Northampton. Please don't bother posting again if you are going to make such wild speculation about others' lives.

I don't want to leave NZ (if you were refering to me). We have a dry, centrally heated and double glazed house in a wonderful quiet cul de sac. I really like NZ mainly because of the population density. There is no where else I would live right now. I just happen to be a realist and can see the country's problems getting way out of hand. It would be stupid to stick your head in the sand and say 'NZ is a bunch of roses', because its not. I accept all the rot about NZ and for now luckily none of it impacts on me directly unlike my old life in the UK. When and if it does I will ship out somewhere else.

Default Re: Is New Zealand a 3rd World Country

its not a 3rd world country

we do suffer from some commodities being more expensive as a consequence of our distance from markets and population.. there isnt the buying power

we also suffer from some duopolies (Vodaphone & Telecom) ( the Oz owned supermarkets)
we mis out on as we pay export prices for non export meat

but.. we have a wonderful country.. its beautiful vistas.. its low population density.. now just think on that...i do.. i think of all the things i used to put up with in the UK and i think
well there are issues.. but on balance.. i'm happy to be here

if your looking for Nirvana.. i' afraid you will have to wait for the big dirt nap!

Broadband.. ive got it.. i live in the sticks.. i get unlimited access.. and downloads up to 200kb/s
the house is cold and abit damp.. its over 100 yrs old.. i intend to insulate and that will be that ( i lived in houses in the UK that were equally damp and cold)

If anyone.. on balance of their situation.. thinks that NZ isnt good for the.. do something about it..change your situation, your job, your country.. or.. your mind set.. life's to short to be unhappy
