I'm really sorry and I know you must be hugely disappointed but Lisa couldn't work anywhere as a nurse here without her registration, even if she could somehow find a voluntary position to gain experience she would still need her NZ registration first to legally work as a nurse and experience doing anything else wouldn't count.

Really the only option would be to gain the experience in the UK first and then apply after the 2 years, I don't think there's any other way if she wants to work as a registered nurse over here.

WE ARE ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED!! So if we change all our plans again and Lisa gains the newly required 2 years experience, the NZNC could change the rules again just when we are reaching the current qualification requirement? So the only way for us to get to NZ by our previously planned timescale, would be for Lisa never to work in nursing!? DEVASTATED!!

Is there anyone else facing the same problem and does anyone know if there is any official way around this new ruling that is about to come into effect?

Thanks for all the replies so far...

There is no official or unofficial way around the new changes. Newly qualified nurses trained in NZ are struggling to get into new grad programmes. Shortage of nurses is no longer the problem NZ faced 4 years ago.

I qualified last year and am currently going through the registration process, fortunately for me I come under the old criteria. There is no official way around the new ruling it has been an ongoing debate for a little while now, I know last year they had a voting thing for these new rules.

You do know about the IETLS test which is also required for registration.

Ive now got the problem of getting a job offer. Some nurse specialties were removed from the Long term short list recently aswell.

I really feel for you guys. This thread prompted me to look on the long term list and my nursing specialism has been removed I am on a WTR visa.
I know lots of newly graduating nurses here who cannot get jobs after their studies.

I emailed the Bay of Plenty the other day Kingacat and was told they do not look at overseas nurses without 3 years experience because of the newly qualified situation, and I think fair play to NZ for looking after their own first.
It is sounding almost similar to the UK some of my cohort didnt get jobs straight away.
Thankfully my specialism is still on the LTSL at the moment.

That'll be that then... The situation was so different 3 years ago when we planned this. I fully understand that the people born in the country should come first - that's not my issue - my issue is simply that our 3 year plan has come to a very and sharp abrupt end. At our age, we will not have another chance. Our whole aim for years was to get to NZ for a better quality of life - hence the reason we are so upset. We weren't looking for a free meal ticket, but willing to contribute to the country and economy.
Thanks again to everyone for all your replies.
Best wishes to you all...

Don't give up. I know 2 years sounds a long time right now but it will go in a flash. Lisa could use the the time to get experience under her belt and also if she can specialise she will be even more employable.

I have been planning this move for 6 years and even now at times it looks like I might not get there.

As I was told by someone If you are meant to make the move it will happen in the time it is meant to not when you think it should happen.

2 years might sound a long time but its not. Lisa will have enough to worry about when firstly qualified its a scary world when you get that PIN and your let loose, plus the time flies, I have now been qualified 8 months and dont know where the time has gone.

I appreciate what you are saying - can I ask your age? We have no wish to stay in the UK anymore...we have wanted out for.many years... I know that 2 years isn't a long time, but at our age, we wo.t have enough time to.settle and pay a mortgage off before we get to retirement age... There's more to it than just the 2 year thing for us... A lot more - if we had been 10 years (or even 5 years) younger, it wouldn't be such a major ise for us. It's our personal circumstances that make this so bad...

Your both in your mid 40's, so say 15 years in NZ till retirement or 13 years if you postpone coming over for another 2 years. I'd think that's plenty of time to settle in.
If Lisa's a student at the moment then when she qualifies and gets a job in the UK your family income will increase. Why not start saving from then and use the extra saved towards your house deposit when you do come over here, then it kind of evens things out a bit as far as length of time to pay off a mortgage is involved as it would be a lesser mortgage to begin with?

Just a thought...

Hi Brodie 16, my Partner wasn't on the skills shortlist, but he got a great job offer here, you say you have service delivery/ contracts management, if it's in the healthcare sector then don't give up yet. What is sector is your experience in?

You make your mid-40's sound like it's ancient. You're not & you've still got plenty of time. As Lisamct says just spend the next couple of years saving up. Yes the rules could change again but that's a chance you'll have to take.

I can understand your devastation but you need to dust yourself off & start making new plans. Sadly, it's just the way the world is at the moment. I'm struggling to find work here due to funding constraints in the health sector. I know something will come up eventually if I persevere. But it is frustrating.

Best of luck to you
