In all honesty he sounded like he'd just had enough of the, well, the politics!!!
Tired of it all, wanted a rest and wanted to be there for his family since he has missed out so much over the last 8 years.

Who would want to be a polician :-) He can now go and make a second fortune in finance without all the hassle or cr^p he gets as PM and good luck to him.

Don Brash supports Judith Collins, so thats not a good omen for her. I think most people consider Dons opinion and then do the exact opposite of what he recommends. I think Paula Bennett would be a better choice. She has a similar jokey personality as Key and does well with a difficult portfolio.
