Network Technician looking for a job
Ello
After searching for the last 3-4 weeks, i have noticed that the main IT jobs are either in Auckland, Wellington and some in Christchurch, however what seems to be odd is that if you are in a particular field, you are limited even further.
Wellington - support technicians
ChCh - programmers
Auckland - mixture of both with specialities.
This really limits my areas of interests, and i know you should go where the work is, but after i complete my MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) course, and having a HNC in Computing, i think i'll be having to get extra qualifications to compete.
By the time i move i'll have had 4 years exp in IT, which isnt a lot, however enough i think to be confident in what you are doing.
What advice would you offer and where to go? i do have an opportunity to move around fields, and this is the time to do it
thanks, Paul

Not sure I understand this post... There are certainly jobs in your field in each of the 3 main centers mentioned, New Zealand is very short of good IT staff. Having said that i wouldn't consider MCSA a suitible qualification to obtain a job as a Network Technician.

Re: Network Technician looking for a job
Sorry i should have said, that my wife, loves christchurch, however, no network support jobs are offered there, or from what i searched, it doesnt seem to be a popular job in that area.
This would naturally lead me to go searching in Wellington and Auckland, however is the market as crazy as it looks? some people are looking for guys who are Microsoft, Cisco and Web developers/ C# programmers
I earn £20,500 here in scotland and i guess earning the equivalent in NZ would be great, which i think would be around $55,000. To get a job in that pay scale you're looking at having an extra specialism, i.e networking plus, web developement, and all with 4 - 5 years exp.
I dont mind, i'll do what it takes, i just want to create a realistic plan and training routine, so i can come to NZ armed with whats needed.

Re: Network Technician looking for a job
I dont really like to be called the technician, as it put me in the same boat as the Biology, AV and Physics technician - totally different kettle of monkeys
This is maybe where the link between the UK job market and NZ is confusing, i think NZ's job titles and descriptions are the way it should be, and is making me re-think the road i should be going, ITwise.

Best bet to see where you stand is to search on seek.co.nz for IT jobs you feel match your skill set, then contact the recruitment company direct and speak with them... don't just send your CV in, you'll need to follow it up with phone calls. Like myself they probably won't take you too serious until your in NZ ready to sit interviews, but they'll explain that to you. I found most companies only too willing to offer advice on what's required and what you should do...

Re: Network Technician looking for a job
I did exactly what you said, and e-mailed an agency and sent them my CV, and they replied, saying that i would suit a junior IT support role, with an expectation of around $45 - $50,000 pa - which i'm really pleased about
I dont expect to fly in and be held in high regard just because i think i'm good, i understand i'll need to start at the bottom and work hard,
I'd quite like that and really i'm needing it, just because my experience of IT folk in the uk is that they are quite happy to sit and let it all run, then when it all goes Ti*** up, they just call a 3rd party support contractor to fill in the blanks.
I'd rather fix it myself, and learn

Its true that NZ employers tend to look for all rounders rather than specialists; if you have these skills then up to $60,000 should be attainible in Wellington. I agree that Seek has a good range of jobs or try Telecom NZ / Gen-i as they are ALWAYS looking for good people.

Here is a link to a site called The Wellies. You may find contacting them helpful.
Question to those in Wellington
This expat group is still operating is it ? It used to hold meet-ups once a month but I haven't seen any advertised of late.

True, out of interest what would your immigration status be before you did leave...? Do you qualify for working holiday visa (Under 30)?

Re: Network Technician looking for a job
The Wellies site doesnt seem to have a forum to chat to people, however they are doing a refresh of the site, so who knows what will be on there in future.
I've been served with a reality check to be honest and here in my current job, i'm classed as an IT whizz, and pc genius, which is all very well and you feel good about it, and think your progressing, but it can leave you with a false sense of security, because when you start writing down your experience and things, you start to realise, hmmm do i actually know that inside out? or does using it from time to time class as experience?
I use Dreamweaver everyday to update the academy's website, but i dont class my experience of DW as Advance, just because i dont need to make use of all of its features to simply update a site.
However on the other hand, i use VNC server, to troubleshoot pc's, and its simplicity makes it easy and thats as far as you can go with it, but does that mean i'm an advanced user? i dunno.
I would like to know, what it is that IT managers are looking for, is it someone who is able to learn fast, or has the bells and whistles and a glowing CV with every training module known to man.
My recent contacts with employers has been positive so far, and i seem to fit in to the junior IT support role, which takes me back to the comment above, where i'm held in high regard for what i do here, and am almost the network admin. But being classed as a junior IT support person has knocked me down a peg or two, and its something i think i'll have to get used too, because this might suggest that i'm starting at the beginning again.
Not to worry, if it needs to be done, then i'll be first in line
