Look at it this way, if you get fired you'll be able to go on social welfare and get a free house.
Still your motivation levels must be through the floor, what about "courting" a few rival companies for a position? (i.e. jumping before your fired)
If that fails you may just need to update your CV this afternoon and then go home early (of course by 'home' I mean to the pub).

Never say never..it can still be a strong growth market and yet they want to grow with less staff...called 'showing you can manage a budget in hard times' and complete corporate twaddle as usual.
Of course the more we will all panic and save instead of spend..the worse the recession gets
