Things are quiet for permanent roles but there seems to be a bit of contract stuff around.
Job security?

in some fields "contract" is now the only way to go.
what sort of contract stuff is it - in our field it can be hooking up with a bigger contractor on a long/short term agreement, true subbing or just picking it up as a sole trader/limited co......
I'm limited but given the market I might be taking up one or other of the offers on long term agreements I have, here and O/S.......hard times and some decisions to make.

Stick to a kiwi company
EDS, HP, IBM, Unisys, etc. in NZ are reducing numbers.
Generally, govt. jobs in NZ are very secure (they pay less though)

You're in for a surprise, mate
Nah. Not at all
hey, I am a civil servant.
(But I prefer not to talk about the detailes here though....)
Everyday I have a regular hot date with expats friends (males) at lunch time who work for govt Ministries in Welly and I hear how many their colleagues were recently laid off . just laid off 8 of his colleagues (loads of Policy Analysts in particular) this week. It was such a shock I had no idea what to say
My younger bro works for the Department of Internal Affair as a legal advisor and I keep asking him every time on the phone - (my first question for him is - are you not laid off yet?? ) - whether his positon is _secure_ (now) ?? - even if it's called a "permanent position" - - he said so far it's okay..........OKAY!!!!!! NO WORRIES!!!! but many of his colleagues have been VERY worried about .....................since the beginning of the year.
loads of woking ppl seem to be in a bad mood & feeling anxious- so do I. I've been thoroughly distressed :curse: . you can tell from my recent crap posts.

Truth is in the global economy no one is or feels safe...what happens when everything is 'outsourced to the Third World' and everyone in the West is out of work..who buys the products and services then?
'Designed in EU' is just the start....can we really just be the 'brains' part of the equation with no involvement in production/manufacture, Thatcher thought so...'the service economy' but I doubt even she had thought as far ahead as the services themselves being outsourced.
If it helps..it was all doom and gloom when I was leaving Uni 20 odd years ago and I have never been unemployed..except when I chose to be because kids came along....it does feel a bit 'same old same old' ...I've often felt the threat of 'job insecurity though' and it seems that never goes away.

Got no time for National or for Hyde and his oppos in particular.
Odd that we're in this mess (mainly) because of the exact type of people that someone here elected.......and it wasn't me!
