Hi Jacque,
secretly drop the cat of at your mums and she`ll think its another wild one and take it in !!!!!!!!! Then after 6 months and you want to stay in NZ, reclaim him.
Easy.

Re: Moving to NZ from Spain with a cat
HI there;
Im exactly in the same situation but with a little Yorkie.My boyfriend is a New Zealander(with British nationality)and has been living in Europe for the last 7 years.We have a little Yorkie of 3 kgs and we want to go to New Zealand with him.I honestly cant imagine being without him.We are living in Spain and for avoiding the quarantine in NZ we have been thinking in coming back to the uk 6 months just before leaving and also earn some pounds
the problem is that is such a long journey and we dont want to put him on cargo in planes.We have been looking for all sort of possibilities:going with him by boat,checking the airlines that allow him in the cabin or using as tramsporter a ENglish bag...we just need to check by train(although im not too sure with the fact that if you go by train or you stop for some days in some countries on the way there you will need quarantine in nz no matter if u were living in the uk)
does anybody knows any way of going there without isolatin my dog on cargo or simmilar?

That sounds like a grand adventure, but how will this be less stressful for your dog?
By the way, where do you plan to get off the train and which airline(s) do you plan to take?

The flights are the quickest and least stressful way of doing this. The animals sleep for most of the time - they aren't in with the cargo as such but all the animals go into a lit, ventilated and warm section of the hold where they are safe and fine. They all have custom made crates that are the right size for them and are vet checked before travel and iassume probably after. It's not that big a deal - cetainly better than 6 months quarantine. Check out some of the animal carriers - there are plenty of threads on here where some companies are named as being brilliant. Then check out the websites. This should put you mind at ease.
Hey, now - for someone new to the forum you shouldn't go around winding up the locals - I like Happynz - he has a dry sense of humour - he might shot from the hip but he's a mine of information and very useful to know.

Re: Moving to NZ from Spain with a cat
This from the Department of Conservation website -- In March 2002, the Department of Conservation’s Chief Technical Officer for Biosecurity declared ferrets to be unwanted organisms under the Biosecurity Act, through assessing them against set criteria. This result was communicated to other departments’ chief technical officers (CTOs) for comment. There were no concerns among the other CTOs and, accordingly, ferrets were gazetted as unwanted.
As ferrets are on the 5th Schedule of the Wildlife Act, the actual legal ramifications of the status could not take effect until an amendment to the Biosecurity Act was passed (in July 2003). The wording of the amendment allows powers under the Biosecurity Act to be used against an unwanted organism, regardless of any protection under the Wildlife Act. The unwanted organism status of ferrets has had the desired effect of stopping the sale and reducing the public acceptance of ferrets as pets.

Have you contacted MAF or DoC about importation? Ferrets are considered to be pests. They often carry bovine tuberculosis which is a threat to one of New Zealand's largest industries. They also contribute the the decimation of New Zealand's native birdlife including the Kiwi and penguin.
