Tens of thousands of people have done exactly that! Thousands of British expatriates from Spain arrive daily with their cats.

No, sorry...unsolicited sarcasm there. Bringing your moggie shouldn't be a problem, but be prepared to pay a bomb.

Hi

My name is Karen and we relocated from Spain to New Zealand . We had a dog on a pet passport but he would have had to go into quarantine in NZ and the thought of that on top of the journey made us think about bringing him with us . We eventually re homed him with some friends of ours and he is very happy , for us at that time the best decision to make for him as he was an extremely nervous traveller. We did all of our arrangements through Crown in Madrid they were very professional and they will handle all of the paperwork for your cat and guide you through the process . If you would like to know more details , contacts etc PM me

Best of luck Karen

I believe that the cat has to be in the UK for 6 months and the blood test done here, then it can fly to nz without any quarantine. It is best to check with DEFRA.

I took 2 dogs and 1 cat our in 2005, returned in 2007

Looking to take out 2 dogs, one cat and 2 ferets!!! (Don't ask) !!lol later in 2008 and the best quote has been from animalcouriers.co.uk:) who we originally used in 2005.

Good Luck with the move

It has been illegal to sell, distribute or breed ferrets in New Zealand since 2002.

So, as far as ferrets go, bringing them with you ain't gonna happen.

This from the Department of Conservation website -- In March 2002, the Department of Conservation’s Chief Technical Officer for Biosecurity declared ferrets to be unwanted organisms under the Biosecurity Act, through assessing them against set criteria. This result was communicated to other departments’ chief technical officers (CTOs) for comment. There were no concerns among the other CTOs and, accordingly, ferrets were gazetted as unwanted.

As ferrets are on the 5th Schedule of the Wildlife Act, the actual legal ramifications of the status could not take effect until an amendment to the Biosecurity Act was passed (in July 2003). The wording of the amendment allows powers under the Biosecurity Act to be used against an unwanted organism, regardless of any protection under the Wildlife Act. The unwanted organism status of ferrets has had the desired effect of stopping the sale and reducing the public acceptance of ferrets as pets.

Have you contacted MAF or DoC about importation? Ferrets are considered to be pests. They often carry bovine tuberculosis which is a threat to one of New Zealand's largest industries. They also contribute the the decimation of New Zealand's native birdlife including the Kiwi and penguin.

Well, good luck then. I can't imagine you are going to be too popular bringing those ferrets as over three-quarters of New Zealanders are in favour of a total ban on the keeping of ferrets.

In 1999 the Department of Conservation released a public discussion document 'What can we do about ferrets?' This allowed New Zealanders the chance to have their say about whether ferrets should be kept as pets or farmed in New Zealand.

Over one thousand submissions were received on the discussion document, and 77 percent of submissions received from individuals requested a total ban on the keeping of ferrets by anyone in New Zealand.

Thankyou for all the informatin. I will peruse it at my leisure. My daughter is on an animal site and someone else has said the same about the ferrets to her, but the exportation certificate has been issued this end. Wouldn't want them to fly all that way and find they have to be destroyed. It would break her heart.

To avoid the broken heart you really need to contact DoC or MAF. Good luck.
