Post Moving to New Zealand September 2013

Hi All,

Were new to the forum and just looking for some advice, hopefully information provided will help paint a picture. Were trying to get as much preparation before coming over in September.

Kayleigh 24 - Registered Nurse, 2 years Experience (as of March 2013) in General Medicine and Renal Dialysis. Currently in the process of getting things sorted which are needed for NZ Nursing Council registration.

Craig 24 - History Student (Graduates July 2013), 6 Years previous experience of Civil service working in administration. Cousin who moved to CHCH 2-3 years ago.

We both have Working Holiday Visas for 12 months and if we get settled hope to upgrade to residency. We have booked flights for September 2013.

Nursing - I am hoping to have everything sorted soon to apply for NZ registration as I need to do the language test. I currently work in Renal Dialysis but previous to medical/Renal hospital ward.

Are there many specialised jobs out there? are they easy to get? Hoping to start in CHCH then move wherever work takes us. and I will hopefully be applying to DHB and seek.nz at the end of the month - any other advice on where to start?

Craig - plenty of administration experience and having his history degree will hopefully help. Where is the best place to look for jobs, we have looked at seek.nz but don't know where else to go.

Any general advice would be much appreciated as we look as much as we can for houses etc on the internet.

Thank you in advance!

Welcome Kayleigh and Craig,

Trademe has a jobs section but it would probably cover the ones already on Seek but worth a look. As you have a Holiday Visa's you'll have plenty of time to look around to see if you fancy giving the place a go and visiting both Islands.

Can't help much on the South Island as live nr Wellington on the North but if you find yourself over here maybe I can help out more then.

Good luck and look forward to hearing more of your journey

Hello Kayleigh,
Renal Dialysis stations are obviously far fewer than you are used to although I couldn't tell you about Christchurch services (I'm in NI).
I had more than a few years experience in haemodialysis but knew when I had a telephone interview for a medical ward that there weren't any jobs at the time. With a population of 4.5 million (or so) and limited resources renal care isn't quite the same as in UK but is similar. NZ is doing it's best and is improving all the time.
To be honest your far better off getting to grips with NZ Hospitals by searching for medical/renal ward work to get your foot in the door with the District health board. After that you can have a look around at a few units (they are usually friendly and accomodating to RNs with HD experience to take a look around), see where you may want to work and bide your time until a vacancy comes up.
In my case, by the time a HD job came along I had my shifts organised around looking after my kids and my husband's work and therefore didn't go for it. I have however found it very easy to change specialties (3 times) so keep an open mind, you may enjoy having a change especially as you are only 2 years in.
Sorry, have no useful advice for your partner but I'm sure others will.
Best of luck!

Hey Kayleigh & Craig & welcome, I'm also from Sunderland & used to work at the Royal, I'm an RN. Just be aware that getting reg from nursing council here can take approx 4 months & longer if there are any probs & you will also need your IELTS results to apply. Also once you have your reg, you will need to apply for an Annual Practising Cert. Once your here, you can apply to DHB's for casual / temp work, they have loads of casual work at Wellington Hospital at the mo. Good luck

Mrs. Fychan Thank you for your reply I had been looking on trademe at other things but not housing so I will keep a look out thank you. We may end up in Wellington as we are just starting in CHCH before moving around so I will keep that in mind. Thank you again!

pintaguiness-pickledegg Thank you for that information, I have looked at NZ Renal services and I have found a lot of research but not a lot of general information, that was very helpful. Another question, you mentioned changing specialities, what was this like? Training or experience wise? How do they accommodate this? Thank you!

Boopy -I never thought id hear from anyone from Sunderland! I work at Sunderland Royal Hospital at the minute. I'm booking my IELTS next month then I will be able to continue with the NZ registration and then get onto the practice cert. Lots to do! Thanks for the link I'm having a look now.

Thank you all for your replies they have all been so helpful. I'm pleased I joined these forums!

Hi

Have you tried the www.workingin-newzealand.com website. You can find info on jobs and maybe find info for going on the expo's they hold in the UK.

Hi guys. I'm also originally from Sunderland (Roker then Ashbrooke, and also studied at Durham) and have just moved to Christchurch. I can't offer much advice in your profession but start making contacts (call people if you can, especially when you're here) and I hope for the best for both of you.
