Moving from Auckland to Christchurch - guidance please.
Hi - I'm looking for a bit of advice/guidance if you guys can help me.
We've been living in Auckland for the last 10 years after moving from London and are getting to the point where we want a different lifestyle and are considering moving on possibly to Christchurch.
We're both in our mid 40s, no kids and a dog and would be looking to quit full time jobs, get a smaller place on a bigger section so we could move towards self-sustainability. But equally I'd be bored stuck in the middle of nowhere as I'd like to find somewhere with a bit of a community spirit so I could do some voluntary work (community gardening, dog rescue etc) and maybe buy a small business or work part time (and a good cinema and a Mexican would be even better!)
If there's anyone already in Christchurch who can give me a few insights on places to check out, ones to avoid and any handy hints that would be really appreciated - thanks.

Alice in Videoland, The Home Film Festival Specialists. and http://www.artfilms.co.nz/ are two very good independent cinemas. There is a big community garden in Strictland street and lots of others here Canterbury Community Gardens Association
There's plenty to do in Christchurch and loads of community groups, probably more since the quakes. For Mexican, mmm Mexicanos, Tequila mockingbird both Victoria street, Mexico - Manchester street. Mamacitas mexican food truck - the commons. A very interesting time to live here, yes rates are going up but so are lots of new funky buildings with a huge emphasis on hospitality.

Ah Mark has just uncovered a favorite night out of ours....jump on a bus straight into the new depot.....walk up the street and grab a couple of beers in Smash palace or a couple of original Czech Budweiser tap beers down Strange Lane across the road from the bus depot, walk up the road to catch a film at Alice then walk back to Manchester Street to Mexico to fill face, back to the bus depot and home.....sweet as !
Just look up TC1,TC2 and TC3 to see what land is categorized as after the shake.

A lot of people will say avoid the eastern ones, but some 'bad' areas have decent pockets and 'good' areas only need one bogan neighbour tearing around in their loud skyline.
Anyway my two cents worth, I personally wouldn't fancy living in Waltham, Woolston, Linwood, Aranui, Shirley, Phillipstown, Richmond eastern Mairehau, New Brighton, bits of Northcote, Sydenham, Hornby, Sockburn, Riccarton, Upper Riccarton or Addington. (Disclaimer that's just my opinion and others will totally differ).

There are so many suburbs in Chch so it really all depends what you're after. Cashmere and St Martins area are very nice (used to work there) but you will pay for it. St Albans/Merivale area are both more upmarket and you will also pay for it! Then there's Fendalton which is a bit posh and expensive. Then there's beachy places like Sumner, New Brighton, Waimari, Lyttleton and the bays around the Port Hills like Governors Bay. Depends if you want to be near the sea, near pubs/clubs/cafes, near the country side or right in the city centre etc...
