Moving to Auckland In April '15
Hey Guys,
I have accepted a job in Auckland, with a salary of $65,000 p.a - my first question is - will this be a sustainable salary?
I am a bachelor, 26 years of age who enjoys a modest style of life. I would ideally like to rent a 1 bedroom flat or studio, around a part of town where I can socialize and meet people.
Can anyone offer a sensible budget for this?
Secondly, does NZ offer better interest rates for savings?
I have currently been working in Saudi Arabia for the past 2 years, so I am relishing the change of scenery!!!
I look forward to you comments

As your probably aware house and rental prices are very high in aux.
You might want to consider house sharing. Its much cheaper, if you look around you
can get a room in a much nicer house than you could afford on your own and there
will be housemates there to help you settle in, socialise with and answer any questions you might have about all things kiwi.
Have a look on trade me under flatmates in the real estate section

Hi Tom,
My Mrs was earning roughly that money in her job as a nurse in AKL. I can tell you that whilst it might seem a lot of money, it really isn't, especially for Auckland. Although as a single person looking for a studio or 1-bed, you'll be OK on that money, just don't expect to be really well off, alright?
Housesharing def a great start, but there are plenty of studio or 1-bed apartments in the CBD which might be in your budget.
Good luck!

I have a work colleague who is on around 75k and he lives in the quadrant and seems to be okay with the money that's left every week.

You will be on a budget with that salary but not necessarily a problem for everyone.

Hey, 65K is more than enough to support yourself. Compared to the UK there is no council tax, water is usually covered when you're renting, you will spend a LOT less on heating - especially if you move into a decent apartment.
If you share, you will find you have even more money spare - especially if you have no kids.
