Question mortgages in NZ

Hi,

I have been looking at houses for months on the Internet on all the NZ sites for Nelson and surrounding areas as we are moving out in February. We aren't actually buying for a while as we are going to rent.

But i'm getting so much conflicting information, we have a deposit not a great one but we thought it wasn't to bad of around $148,000. We decided to come out on a visiting visa as the jobs weren't coming to us we decided to go to them. My OH has a job interview shortly after we arrive and we have been told that the national average out there is around $35 - $40,000, i'm trying not to convert back into pounds but it is hard. (We are actually hoping that the wage will be more).

I have been in touch with a mortgage broker in Nelson but i'm just not sure now what we can afford, all the houses i've been looking at are around the $350 - $400,000 mark. But personally I do not see anyway how we can afford a house out there, surely there must be some nice houses out there for less but I just can't seem to find any.

I know we are in no rush, but it would be nice to have an idea of what we can afford. I know we are coming for a lifestyle change, but I just didn't want to start at the bottom of the property ladder again, I won't be working as our youngest won't be at school till late next year.

Anyone with any info or advise please reply.

It's a tough call. Be positive and look long term. Hopefully your husband can increase his wages after being here for a time. Perhaps use your nest egg to purchase a section and then save like crazy and get a new build later on?

Good luck.

Have you tried some of the mortgage calculators on the bank pages??

Try www.kwiwbank.co.nz

www.asb.co.nz

What is it that your OH does for a living? someone on here will be able to give you a realistic figure on wages
