Contact energy one of our larger energy providers in NZ is slashing 10% of its work force due to a nationwide slump in energy use. Slow down in use is mainly from the industrial sector, shows that we are on a gradual slow down one imagines?

Thats a shame. I hate hearing about job losses everyday. Most countries seem to be in a bad state, i hope it gets better sooner rather than later

Some reports quote the industrial demand reduction as mainly coming from two big users (smelter and a paper mill), closing. Not good news all round but better than a true nationwide slump if that is the case as the job cuts may be just a one-time adjustment.

There's also increasing awareness of energy efficiency. I know it won't account for a major drop in energy use but as more and more people turn to it, it'll appear to reduce the energy consumption I guess.

There has been such a drop in demand here - better efficiency, peeps being more careful after a couple of price hikes, solar panels are now all the go - that the supply charge per day has gone up to cover the loss of income by the electricity suppliers.

So it would seem that eventually, yes, an overall drop in demand may be on it's way.
