I think his main point was that the common currency is a disaster for a union without transfer payments between members.

With federation, there would have been transfer payments from Germany and the North to Greece and the South.

He made a very good point, and one that Nicola Sturgeon needs to spell out.
Will Scotland have it's own currency, use the British Pound or the Euro?

I know several heterodox economists have warned her about this but haven't seen any evidence of her taking note (so far).

London Stock Exchange - Deutsche Boerse deal has been blocked, allegedly on competitive grounds. However I wonder if this has a bit to do with the EUs negotiating position on financial markets.

Interestingly Theresa May has talked of Article 50 being irrevocable but when asked if Article 50 could be be reversed Donald Tusks view was more interesting: "Formally, legally, yes." Although he did qualify this was very unlikely politically. I guess you now have almost a single issue UK government until May, 2020.

By most measures the UK economy is starting to face the headwind as the ol' girl swings about. Real/inflation adjusted wage growth is negative (BoE are looking at a rate rise as well as inflation has picked up which would likely increase this problem), productivity has remained stagnant since 2007, already week GDP data has been revised downwards this year. Britains "brexit-ready economy" is not fairing so well and we've not even reached the main event yet! ;)

It looks like the EU is very keen for the UK to fulfil its stated goal and, at this point, there doesn't seem much appetite for trade extensions or special trade favours to the UK.
