Mobile phones
Nearly in NZ. Need to sort out my mobile. Any views on who's best? Is it sensible to get a package including home phone and internet connection? I'll be living outside Queenstown so doubt I've got all of the fastest connections.

I find 2 degrees is good value but it might not be available in your area. Other options are Telecom which I believe has the widest coverage and vodafone. Telecom mobile prices have come down a bit lately.
I can't help on whether it is worthwhile getting a package. I have very low mobile usage and last time I looked pre-pay was the best option. Your needs may be different though.
It might be worth picking up a cheapy that comes with a sim and making do until you feel ready to really study what's around.
Be aware that Skinny phones are locked - not sure how they get away with that because all phones in NZ should be sold unlocked. It costs $30 to get them unlocked - free if you wait 9 months. I hear that their prices are good though.

Hi
I visit Queenstown often, I am with 2degrees, always get good signal. I would recommend them, I picked up my sim card fro Auckland when I landed nearly 3 years ago and I haven't experienced any problems.

Im with 2 degrees and find it ok, was also cheap to call back to uk - 22c p/m when i didnt have internet.
Vodafone might be a good option if your looking at a package deal with landline and internet, they also have a deal with Sky if you wanted to get that too.

Not sure why someone would need a mobile phone in NZ? Isn't the beautiful scenery enough without making phone calls whilst out and about?

Thanks all. Good advice. Hadn't heard of 2degrees and think I'll go pay as you go until I figure out the land phone and internet once I've moved in.
bearskin - know what you mean and don't worry I plan to have it switched off most of the time! ;-)

I've got prepay with 2 Degrees, and have a great plan. It's $19 each month, and I get 30 free minutes, unlimited texts, and 600mb data. They also do mobile broadband if you want to tether devices, rather than paying for fixed broadband.

Re: Mobile phones
Hi there. I went with Vodafone. Last April I made a direct comparison of them all and Vodafone came out best. I was looking for data deals as I have an iPhone.
I went pay as you go, it seems way more popular than contract. I brought my iPhone with me and got it unlocked before I left.
I get 250mgb data and unlimited texts to NZ Vodafone mobiles for $20 a month. If I call or text on on Vodafone mobiles it simply comes off the $20 credit. If I run out of data before the month is up, I am able to top up data and use any remaining credit to do that - $4 for an extra 100mgb.
I use the phone as much as I ever did before and my mobile bill in a contract used to be £35. The $20 top up easily lasts me a month. I use google maps as a 'tom tom' and the works.
Hope that helps.
