CDMA will be kept live and gradually the new phones will be introduced to NZ. Just like the TACS switch over in the UK. Phones only have a short life span, so it should not cause to much of a problem.
I don't know the time scales but there will be quite a few years left.

If it was anything else in New Zealand it would be within 12 months but this is Telecom we are talking about so could be a long time yet

you can use your vodaphone mobile from the UK and if you set up vodaphone passport you pay a one off fee of 75p per call (either making or recieving) plus your normal UK tarif.

Worked for me over here, although you will find that NZ folk are reluctant to ring UK numbers. Vodaphone pay as you sim in $35 with $5 of calls included. So it sounds like you might as well buy a phone from the warehouse.

Good luck with the recce!
