Meeting people

Hi, I'm a single guy new to Auckland. I'm really looking for a social activity to do to meet people but am stumped.

I was in Australia last year and found it easier because I happened to be in a really social workplace and apartment. I'm working at the moment but it's really antisocial, and my housemates do their own thing, so definately need something outside of that.

I enjoy exercise but not really into competitive sports, although I do enjoy playing low standard/uncompetitve football (soccer) and I have played in a pool team before.

I wonder if anyone could recommend any clubs/classes/social events that has maybe worked well for them? I'm pretty much open to trying anything new that sounds good.

Cheers

Mark

You don't say where you are based? Might be able to give you some pointers if I know which town you are in. :-)

Sorry - I'll put glasses back on :-)

Tepid Pools in the CBD have a gym, there is a running group that goes from there and also swimming clubs and everyone is very friendly there.

You may wish to check out this website it is the Sunday Football Website they have a forum and you may be able to find a social football team there.

There is also the Auckland Expat group the next meeting in on the 10th April - you may wish to go along, this is a very mixed group and you may find a like minded person.

Kiwis like sports, there should be some football side things going on. and touch rugby is quite big, you should look into joining a team for that. Then there is running/ swimming etc. Mostly you will do pretty well if you look into a team sports type event.

If your all sported out, you could look into something like taking up learning a new langueage (alliance francaise).

Kiwis arent as keen as going to the pub as brits in general, so its harder to socialise that way unless you have established friendships already. Having said that, they do like going out for a beer or two during friday lunch or fridays after work.

Dont be too impatient, it takes a fair amount of time, kiwis do tend to keep to their own circle of friends so dont expect it to come too quickly.
