If you are talking about the UK equivalent of Child Benefit, you DONT get it until you have lived as a resident for 12 months. I was hoping to get something along the same lines as the CB in the UK but was disappointed to find that out when we went along to get our IRD number.

Well I will definitely give it a try, but as I said before when we arrived in January we asked about it when we were in the Inland Revenue office and were told that we would have to wait for 12 months as we had just arrived. I said are you sure because I had read that we would get it as my husband earn £.... so she double checked with her manager and said that no we had to wait for 12 months. So if i am entitled to it I will be very pleased but also annoyed that I was given the wrong information...Cheers!

People are claiming it who are on PR and have just arrived so you should be able to get it. It's called Family Assistance and there is a new in work payment coming in as of April 1st which you should qualify for too if you or your partner work .. I think it's more than 30hrs a week.

Here's the link for the calculator to work out how much you'll get.

Eligibility for family assistance

To be eligible to receive family assistance you must be aged 16 or older and meet at least one of the following residence requirements:

* You are a New Zealand resident and have been in New Zealand continuously for at least 12 months at any time. You need to be both a tax resident and resident in New Zealand when you apply for your payments.
* You are caring for a child who is both resident and present in New Zealand

From that I'd say if you have children then the 12mth rule doesn't apply, would explain why people are getting it from day one.

Psychologically 2.90 is probably a big marker. If it hits and stays then I personally dont think it will fall back below much at all. Hopefully clear run towards 3.0 now (just so long as UK rates don't get cut).

Very interesting right now. I'm still sitting tight and soooo glad I did not use my Investors visa at the end of 2005 - I quite happily let that expire... ;-)

Here's my currency trader's point of view from purely a personal standpoint.... from a technical standpoint only, i.e. from a chart analysis point of view:-

At time of writing we just hit a new high of 2.8477 on this leg of new recent uptrend. The down trend line from the high of 3.7150 to a low of 2.4128 has been broken so we are in a current uptrend.

When the pound ran up vs the NZD to 3.7150 there was a spike low at 2.9166; this will form one area of resistance on this run up; ie potential halting point to the run up. When the GBP then weakened from 3.7150 down to NZD of 2.4128 there was another spike low at 2.8612, which will form another resistance point on the current run up.

The last run down from 3.7150 to 2.4128 yields fibonacci resistance levels at 33.3% of 2.8464(hit today!!!), 38.2% of 2.9102. After that we're talking the 50% retracement being 3.0639!!!

So I will be watching the 2.8464 to 2.9166 area for signs of the NZD strengthening, ie GBP uptrend breakdown, as a possible area to buy a chunk of our NZ dollars on a forward contract(ie lock the rate in).

If it breaks through 2.945 the charts don't look like there's anything stopping the run up to 3.00 at least. I personally will then look to lock in some more of our money around 3.00 on another forward contract.

Remember you can use Forward Contracts with your currency broker(eg Halo, HIFX etc) to lock in a rate if it reaches a level you're happy with so if it does suddenly start heading back down you've protected yourself.

On a cautionary note the daily chart is already looking quite overbought; the relative strength index already in the overbought area of the indicator; doesn't mean it can't go higher but will possibly mean we could see some more consolidation before another leg up.

Remember this is just my technical view; fundamentals are something else....ya never know when the NZ central bank could throw a spanner in the works on interest rates etc etc.

Hope that helps a bit!!!

Dave
UPDATE:
Late in US trading hours last nite NZD hit 2.9091 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so I was expecting the high to hit a range of 2.9102-2.9166 per my points above, but hey what can you do; I was only off by 1 cent!!!
No commissions required but all karma gratefully accepted, heehee!!

Profit taking now under way in London trading. Pivot Point analysis says todays low shouldn't be under 2.871 with a floor at 2.8345 if that level passed. The MACD indicator(it's a technical thingee, sorry!!) is showing no negative divergence so this MAY just be profit taking with another run up to come; but its the currency markets so we're talking the worlds biggest casino here, so anything could happen!!! :scared:

If anyone wants the pants bored off them talking currencies feel free to contact me personally; PM, email whatever; no probs!!

Cheers,

Dave
