The avocado/ citrus line is generally reckoned to lie much further north, ie round about north of New Plymouth- Napier/ midway through North Island.

Of course, if you are the coast there will be a microclimate and it might be possble to grow things much further south. In Dunedin mostly geraniums survive the winter and live as perennials.

Dont really think Avocado will grow in the south but do know they thrive well in the North Island but think that they would maybe grow in the Nelson region as kiwi fruit do really well in that district. Lemons grow well in Christchurch & have seen oranges & mandarins growing there too. Apples, peaches, pears, plums, nectarines & apricots all do well. Strawberries & grapes do good too
