Marae in Surrey
I wonder why this is here?
http://lindsaydobsonphotography.com/blog/?p=297
The "About" page for Clandon park just says there's a "Maori house"

Re: Marae in Surrey
Okay for those who are interested but can't be bothered reading all that, it was originally at Wairo in NZ - a popular tourist destination in the 1800s because of the pink and white terraces. When Mt Tarawera erupted it was all destroyed along with the local village (the buried village near Rotorua - worth a visit)
This was the only surviving building and the Govenor General of NZ, Lord Onslow, bought it for 50 quid and shipped it to his family home in Surrey.
It was used as a boat house and shed for years, then partially restored during WWI by convalescing soldiers from the Maori Batallion.
It was eventually restored in the 1980s
Interesting stuff.
The only marae in England apparently.

I was just about to say that. ..... not.
We went to the site of the old pink and white terraces back in '97.
Bit surprised there hasn't been a move to bring it home really.

According to the info there have been several attempts but I assume the National Trust want to keep it on their property. It has been in the UK for over 120 years!

Rob , I'd forgotten all about Clandon park! We used to visit it regularly as it was only a short drive from our house. I always enjoyed visiting in the spring when the daffodils were all out, it was a beautiful sight but a tad incongruous with the Maori house in the background!
