Living in Auckland
We are seriously thinking of emigrating to New Zealand - jobs most likely to be in Auckland. Where are the nice places to live in Auckland (for non-millionaires!)?

We looked at Devonport and it was very expensive, but further up from Devonport there are lots of places to live which are a lot cheaper and still close to good schools and of course the beach
We also looked at the east coast and the west, all very nice but the commute for my hubby was too long into the city. We live in apartment right in the middle of Auckland city,it's very nice apartment but would not recommend city living with children and it's very expensive rent,2 bed apartment small kitchen and 2 bathrooms $700 a week includes bills though. We move out in a week can not wait.
Have you heard of the book Where to live in Auckland it's really good and very useful.
The best thing is drive round and decide where you like to live .
We love it here and people are so friendly, not missing uk one little bit

We love it here in Beachlands.... its 20 minutes outside Auckland to the East. The middle of Auckland isnt for me at all.... too many houses crammed into small spaces and so many sub-divisions. Its nice and peaceful out here although its a big village.... it has the village community spirit... people are friendly and love where they live.... some people have been here all their lives. My OH travels 45-60 mins to get to Penrose which he wasnt happy about at first but now sees the benefits of living out here.... we keep a horse and cats, and OH goes fishing and loves being a volunteer fire fighter. Beachlands is surrounded by green fields and some pockets of natural bush. The house prices here are expensive compared to other areas of Auckland but by the time we bought we had already fell in love with the place. The weather tends to be wet but mild. Heres our local beaches.... Beachlands and Maraetai.

We went to browns bay and it's fantastic for children and with good schools as well, we looked at the house prices and it's a lot cheaper than Devonport, takapuna but just as nice, big long beaches a great children's play area on the beach edge and a lovely family feeling.
In normal day traffic it would take you 30 mins into Auckland cbd in rush hour a lot longer but that applies were ever you live on the North shore!!!
Albany i don't no a lot about you can see it from the motorway and it looks like toy town to me all new houses springing up, but thats my opinion so better ask about.
Helensville is heading out to the west, its quite a drive well it was when we went that way on Sunday in all that rain.very oldie worldly,Browns bay would be my choice but i love the north shore so i could be buy est.
The kids love it here and no homesickness yet !!!!
MY kids are 5,11,16 and just can't wait for school now, which starts on Monday yippee.
Hope this helps a little, Jude lives in Browns bay so I'm sure she could Answer any question on schools in the area ,
Still up for a nite out Jude only a week to go till we move
Good luck ,Jane

Thanks for posting the pictures they are truly amazing.
Can I ask - what are the average house prices in Beachlands not that the pictures have tempted me!

Hiya.... prices here at the moment seem to go from $350k+ for 3 bedroom bach up to million plus down on Pohutukawa Road which is cliff top. We could either have bought a nicer, newer 3 bedroom on a largish section or this older type villa that we have bought on a full section. We paid $450k which for the size of this house isnt too bad in our opinion. But if you compare prices here say to house prices in somewhere out West Auckland we wouldve got a lot more for our money elsewhere. The sea is calm here so ideal if you have a young family... not so good if you wanna surf etc. There are parks down on the beachfront... you can see Auckland in the distance but its still nice and peaceful here.

I have lived in Browns Bay for 4 years now, we have just brought our first house here so planning on staying for a few years! We love it, I have a 18 and 16yr old and a 22 month old and we think it is a great place for kids. As a comparison to Beachlands, we paid $480,000 for ours but it is on a much smaller section than SarahB's and ours is a smaller house I think. Torbay is a bit cheaper, its just up the road from browns bay. We looked at several houses there but we like being in walking distance to work (we are lucky we work in browns bay!)
There are some good schools here, beaches are great for swimming and there are plenty to choose from, BB has some lovely shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. Its not everyone's cup of tea, I can see that I will be ready for a change in another 5 or so years but I will be like that wherever I live I think.
I would recommend coming here and having a look round, its very lovely
Will find a pic in a minute and post it up.

click on the school name to get the decile rating 1 is low 10 is high 'The Ministry of Education uses a decile rating system for school funding purposes.
Each decile contains approximately 10% of schools. Schools in decile one have the highest proportion of students from low socio-economic backgrounds. Schools in decile ten have the lowest proportions of these students' , also for schools, addresses, web sites etc

Hi Ian, my oldest two were 14 and 12 when we moved here so not had any experience of primary schools myself but I have heard that Browns Bay primary is very good. Our rental house was on the same road so I have seen it from the outside, it has a lovely large outdoor playing area buts that's all I know sorry! Our little kiwi baby is only 22 months but that is where we want her to go to school.
