Likelihood of work - Commercial Diver / Rigger
Just wondering what the system is in NZ for getting work as a British National.
I'm ex-forces and work in commercial diving and on the oil rigs.
Can you just roll up to the country and apply for jobs at the job center or equivalent.
Or is the old 'You must have a sponsor biz' that the US like to use??
Thoughts and advice appreciated.

You can roll up if you like on a visitors visa and chance your arm. Not strictly kosher, so you'd keep the intentions low key. People do it all the times it seems.
If you gained a job offer, then you would simply go to the local NZIS office and apply for a temporary work permit.
That job offer, however, would really need to be in your field of skill and expertise. It couldn't just be any ole thing. That's if you intend for it to be a long term stay that is.
If the job offer you gain is not on a shortage list then your NZ employer needs to prove there is no NZ person for the job. That saying, your occupation is not run of the mill, so it may be an employer could employ you under skill and then you get a WTR.
Depends on your age. Perhaps you could have a working holiday visa just to try the place out.

Thanks for that reply Bevs.
My plan is to head out to NZ late this year and check it out.
I want to basically do some temporary, part-time work, get a feel for the country and look for a job I'm specialised in doing.
I'm gonna be looking into doing some welding courses to get skilled up there as well.
Is finding ordinary work like in an office or on a farm and such like doable on a visitor visa?
Are their seasonal opportunities for this?
Thanks for your time I appreciate it.

There are oil and gas fields to the west of NZ off the Kapiti/Taranaki coast might be best of starting there?
