Learning something new?

Learning something new?
Ok we are well under way in getting a new life, so I was wondering, I have always fancied being a Mid-wife, and as we are starting a new life and life begins at 40 (which I will be just after we land), I wondered if anyone had any info or can point me in the right direction regarding Midwifery in NZ, thought I might have a look at what is needed to study.
Thanks

It depends on what your existing quals and work exp are if you can go straight to polytech onto the degree course, places are limited on the midwifery course at CPIT in Chch (about 40 I think, 200+ if I remember right on the nursing course).
If your quals and exp are not up to scratch then you will need to do the pre nursing course. CPIT offer one full time over 6mths or Hagley Community college offer one part time over 12mths.
I did the one at Hagley and can very much recommend it esp if you have limited or no exp as a care worker as there is a practical element to their course and not to the CPIT 6mth one. All the people who applied from Hagley got a place at CPIT last yr.
If you are looking at embarking on this shortly after landing i would also recommend the part time one, you will be busy enough. Hagley college is right in town and although its a high school you don't really have much to do with the kids and the staff really look forward to teaching you.
I am on my degree course now in Oz and thank my lucky stars for that course at Hagley it has really set me up well.
if you go, say hi to the staff for me.

Thanks Paula,
No I don't have any experiance in care work, so it will be a new start for me, I will have a look on line at the college.
Do you know how long the degree is?

Re: Learning something new?
3yrs full time. Here in Oz my class contact hours are about 20hrs but I put in about another 15 at home. I know it is similar for a friend of mine who is doing the same course at CPIT in Chch.

just had a look, and it looks really interesting, just a quick question, once you have passed this course, does that enable you to go to Uni and study Midwifery or do you need anything thing more??

Re: Learning something new?
The pre nursing course is approved as an entry qualification to both the Bachelor of Nursing and the Bachelor of midwifery at CPIT. It is not a guarantee though there are a set number of places as I said before and you apply for a place. As long as you have reached the pass rate which is 70% in math 70% bio and 60% in chem you will stand a very good chance of a place. During the course if you are getting the marks you need CPIT ask Hagley College to recommend you do a short academic writing course through CPIT to prepare you for Uni life. You can do this 1 night a week at CPIT for about 5 weeks (I did it via distance).
All the people who reached the pass mark on the pre nursing course at Hagley and had done the academic writing who applied for a place at CPIT got one. There was even 1 girl in my class who got a place on the midwifery degree, which is very good as there is only about 40 places. My best mate from the pre nursing course got her place on the nursing degree at CPIT she had never done any care work before and was she is in her mid 40's. The pre nursing course was her 1st time back in a classroom since school.
So its 1yr part time then 3yrs full time and you are qualified.
