Labour Day

I looked up the origins of Labour Day in NZ, please see below:

In New Zealand, Labour Day is a public holiday held on the fourth Monday in October. Its origins are traced back to the eight-hour working day movement that arose in the newly founded Wellington colony in 1840, primarily because of carpenter Samuel Parnell's refusal to work more than eight hours a day. He encouraged other tradesmen also to work for only eight hours a day and in October 1840, a workers' meeting passed a resolution supporting the idea. On October 28, 1890, the 50th anniversary of the eight-hour day was commemorated with a parade. The event was then celebrated annually in late October as either Labour Day or Eight-Hour Demonstration Day. In 1899 government legislated that the day be a public holiday from 1900. The day was celebrated on different days in different provinces. This led to ship owners complaining that seamen were taking excessive holidays by having one Labour Day in one port then another in their next port. In 1910 the government
stipulated that the holiday would be observed on the same day throughout the nation.

I find it a wee bit ironic really as I don't know anybody who works less than 10 hours per day!!

I must have got my wires crossed!

I was going to spend a load of money I haven't got, pass the debt on to someone else and criticise how they start to pay it back. I was also going to give away a big chunk of my pension and pay someone a load of money to do nothing whilst threatening strike action. Then i was going to start a fight off with some foreigners cos some another foreigner said I should.

I get asked that a fair bit, yep I'm definetly from Barnsley and you're completely correct in everything you say. The 'I Blame Thatcher for everything' attitude is still going strong back there, another reason I'm now living in this beautiful country, I couldn't handle it anymore and has certainly held the town back. That attitude as done as much damage in the town as the old witch Thatcher did herself, not that any of the union loving socialist left wingers will ever admit it. I'm certainly no Tory, or particularly any political party supporter but what Labour did to the UK was a massive influence of us getting out of the UK.

Aye, if you put a monkey up for election with a Labour sticker on it'd get voted in in St.Helens!

However my politics are right of centre :p

My OH works long hours too. I used to work 12 hour shifts by choice but only 2 a week here!

I now try to keep away from politics  Having been on this earth long enough to realise that the majority, in any and all parties are usually out for themselves:thumbdown: but the one politician that still makes my blood boil is Thatcher:frown:

I'm guessing Tom by your signature that you are too young to have gone through the Thatcher years - lucky you. In my opinion that woman took the UK back a hundred years. For me and my kind she did nothing, (and that's why even today the police can not guarantee her safety if she ever came to Wales - not that she was ever likely to anyway):sneaky:

But I am also aware that some people seem to think her some sort of messier. I've even seen pictures of her in people's homes (like she's some sort of hero) - and yes Tom they were in Christchurch:blink:

And just like in some places if you put a labour rosette on a donkey it would get in parliament the same can be said about some areas with a tory donkey.

Right, that's UK politics done, now for NZ:rofl:
