Default Are kiwi's becoming more air-headed?

I'm sure most people on here heard about the news of a traveller family who made a mess at a camp site and were reported to have harassed local kiwi's and are now being deported. The media was particular interested in the nationality however claiming them to be drunk Irish, now they have found out that they are from England so the media is now demonizing them as English travellers as if it actually matters what nationality they are. The fact is a few people made a mess and harassed people and it's caught the media attention by storm but most importantly it has caught the attention of the average kiwi. What frustrates me is reading the comments by kiwi's on these media pages where the media are behaving like hooligans harassing the family and acting like louts themselves while kiwis give themselves a pat on the back for coming together and saving their country from this horde of 12 people or so who came to their country to litter.

They are so chuffed with themselves, so chuffed with the actions of their adolescent behaving media invoking a mob mentality that they have been lured into. Chuffed that this has brought NZ together as if thats something to be proud of, whenever the rest of the world's mainstream media report on issues that actually matter kiwis ignore the fact they have one of the highest rates of child poverty in the world, have lakes and rivers drying up and being poisoned, increasing rates of suicide and road deaths, mental health problems on the rise yet THIS is the story that brings them together. Is this what happens when a society indulges in too much in reality tv? To think this story could be made out to be such a big deal and to think that the average kiwi is proud of this is mind boggling. I don't know what has caused this but i'm cringing with embarrassment for the media in NZ and the air-headed people who are lured into this however it's sad to see what the future holds for such a shallow minded generation. I hope the future generation snaps out of this and clings to more meaningful values and to put it bluntly, pulls their head out of their asses on whats important

I have no idea why you seem to some level of sympathy for these disgusting cave dwellers
They are thieving low life pikey shitheads.
They are low life scum in the UK and coming to Nz for a holiday doesn't change that.
If you have issues with nz media that's another issue but you're way off the mark with this one.
NZ TV and media are always highlighting the social issues that kiwis endure, so I'm not sure what the issue is

I have shown no sympathy for their actions and their punishment of deportation was just but the Anti Irish and Anti British slandering that resulted from these people was disgraceful. You have missed the point completely here . This shouldn't be on the mainstream news, it isn't an issue, you claim the media report on issues that actually matter all the time. Yes they do but this isnt a real issue, can you imagine such a story being on BBC news, ITV news or RTE news??? How on earth does such a story become almost the main thing talked about by the country. Also do you see the same coming together of people on social media to try and combat these real issues???

What is obvious Is that while non issues like this get all the attention of the average kiwi on social media bringing them together to essentially form some mob mentality the real issues are left ignored for the most part. How great would it be if people can get together on social matters and demand these real issues get dealt with in the same way. Perhaps they would actually get dealt with. Also I find it disturbing you defend the xenophobic slanders by the NZ Media and people just because a few Irish/UK travellers littered and harassed locals. The actions of the media and kiwi people is embarrassing, they latched onto this story like some mob and resorted to derogatory insults on the media and social media disgusting Irish and British people overseas.

Do you know why this story got so much attention over the real issues, it's because the real issues which mostly affect other people isn't cared for by a society of indifference, people here aren't as bothered about the fact their neighbors are suffering from poverty, increasing mental health issues and suicide, they are more bothered about a few thugs caught littering and harassing a few locals. These rowdy travellers were able to trigger the average kiwi who came together to form a mob, the average kiwi took this personally which is why they cared so much about this story and resorted to derogatory insults. Why did they take it so personal over issues that actually matter??? Because they seen these travellers as rowdy Irish or Brits causing trouble once again in their beautiful pristine country (yea right). Because it makes them feel better about their indifference so they attack the lowest common denominator, a group of thuggish tourists. Their derogatory insults led to Irish and Brits being so embarrassed and offended by the insults they tried to limit this hatred by apologizing for these actions, why apologize??? Should kiwi's apologize for the amount of their young peoples overseas behaving like scumbags, should the media bring this up every-time they harass or litter around the counties they visit??? The story isn't the issue, it's the way the story is blown up, it's the way the media has handled it by heavily focusing on their nationality as if it actually matters invoking kiwi's to join in and it's the hooligan rants and derogatory comments by both the NZ media media and people that have now embarrassed and put down the kiwi reputation worldwide as being xenophobic and quite backwards. It's seems New Zealand is following in the footsteps of their older cousins, Australia which gets itself in international news for mostly the wrong reasons.

The story did make it onto the BBC World Service - not the actions of the travellers- it was the furore that had been caused that was the story.

The Kiwi journalist that was interviewed explained that the people here are just not used to seeing this sort of thing.

Bless them.

Given that it was a British family in the end and that most of the xenophobic slurs were mostly aimed at Brit bashing i dont see how that would trigger me. Perhaps your used to these slurs however 😉. I'm still disgusted by such behaviour regardless of who it's aimed at as it's not how people should behave but what bothers me most if you bothered to read the post was how much this is blown out of proportion by the mainstream media over a period of several days captivating the attention of the entire country while the real issues are overlooked and are never taken with the same interest. I just fail to see how in any sophisticated society this is the behaviour of a reputable media. This is something you'd expect to see in a daily copy of the sun or daily mail, not on TVNZ main news, embarrassing

Lets face it, all the pollies are still on holiday and it probably is the single biggest and most pressing thing that NZ media has had to report on since Harry & Megan left these shores.

Do you have a link as I'd like to see that interview, sounds like the kiwi journalist being interviewed is trying to portray New Zealand as some paradise populated with only the most purist of heart lol. Do they think people around the world are so thick to believe this and not to know they have bigger issues to worry about. Also they might claim they are not used to seeing this sort of thing but they seem to be fairly used to seeing child poverty all around them and meth heads wandering the streets in almost every city of the country not to mention their own youth who are increasingly being lured into street gangs that terrorize their communities but sure none of that can be as bad as a few thuggish tourists coming over here littering and harassing some locals. That's a whole new level of depravity they just can't tolerate lol

This link will do it.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p06y801k wind forward to about 24 and a half minutes unless you want to hear more about BREXIT.

The visitors are Didicoy which the New Zealanders will never have seen before, even the kiwis that did an OE in London or Edinburgh.

The 'unruly' family of tourists are moving down the North Island. New Zealand's public outrage over the "unruly" tourist family here has been hilariously commented on by international media.

Local media have covered the family's movements extensively across the country. And Kiwi social media users were quick to jump on the bandwagon, creating pages, groups and sharing memes on the topic.

But how did the world see the events unfold? We break down what overseas media are saying about the biggest thing to happen in New Zealand since baby Neve.

The family are facing deportation, following weeks of bad behaviour on their holiday.WHY IS ALL OF NZ OBSESSED?

The headline on the story on Slate.com says it all really - 'Why is all of New Zealand obsessed with this drunken, littering, rowdy tourist family?'.

Advertise with StuffThe piece, which is humourously written by Kiwi Tess Nichol, says that the summer holiday slump in New Zealand makes for slow news, which has added to the public becoming "obsessed with this horrible family's misdeeds".

"Since Monday, every major news website in the country has been covering every minor exploit of this crafty family on its homepage, and Kiwi Twitter has been reveling in each absurd detail. On Day Two, Tuesday, the country's paper of record, the New Zealand Herald, created a timeline detailing the bad family's every infraction—a news device usually reserved for covering quickly unfolding national emergencies like earthquakes or tropical storms.

At one point, news alerts were pinging phones hourly: The bad family has been sighted in a Bunnings hardware store and hassled by a member of the public! The bad family tried to turn staff against each other in an Auckland café before running away without paying! The bad family "rudely demanded" to use a random man's scooter! The bad family was spotted throwing their toast on the floor!"FACEBOOK
A video of a large, messy family leaving rubbish near Takapuna Beach has caused an uproar on Facebook. But the troublesome group's reign of terror continued to unfold, with one of the family members known as Tina Maria Cash, pleading guilty to two theft charges in Hamilton District Court.

Outside the courthouse, one of the children was then pictured pulling the fingers to journalists and photographers.

Nichols humourously sums up the scene saying: "There he was, the naughty, confident child - inexplicably shirtless once again, despite being at court - FLIPPING THE BIRD at media and assorted local rubberneckers".KELLY HODEL/STUFF
Members of the unruly travelling family leave the Hamilton District Court. She goes on to say on Slate.com the people of Hamilton weren't taking that lying down, with bystanders heard in video footage laying into the "nation's tormentors".

"How's your holiday?" one person asked.

"Are you going to pick up your rubbish?" inquired another.

"When are you going home?" a third person wanted to know.

The "bad family" are described on Slate.com as a perfect storm.

"Yes, littering is bad, and so is weaseling out of paying your bills. But it's the total lack of remorse this menacing foreign family appears to feel about their actions which has united the public against them."

Do you have any information on this family? Email [email protected]KRISTA CURNOW/SUPPLIED
Krista Curnow took videos of a large group of people at Takapuna Beach who left the place strewn with rubbish on January 13.ENTIRE NATION UNITES

A story published on The Cut's website breaks down a tourist timeline which led to the family attracting the attention of our entire country.

"While on vacation in New Zealand, a family with 'approximately 12' but maybe as many as 15 members spent nearly a month terrorising the nation before the government gave them an official deportation notice.

"Before the notorious, large family was forced to leave, the entire country became a bit obsessed with them," it stated.

Vice even compared New Zealand's wall-to-wall reporting of the familywho "came to see the hobbits" as to basically creating a "demonic holiday scrapbook" of their trip.

Apparently when the family leave, the public's newsfeeds will return to normal and the service industry will finally be able to relax.KELLY HODEL/STUFF
A member of the unruly travelling family makes her way into the Hamilton District Court before the appearance of another member of the group on theft charges.SORRY IRELAND

The first report of the family causing a ruckus at Auckland's Takapuna Beach led New Zealand media to believe the family were Irish. It later turned out they were British. (Sorry all Irish friends).

The Irish Times in particular made an effort to point this out with their headline reading: 'Family to be deported from New Zealand is British, not Irish'.

Locally, members of New Zealand's Irish community also expressed they felt unfairly blamed for the chaotic actions of the family.

Honorary Consul-General for Ireland in New Zealand Niamh McMahon called it "Irish bashing".

The Irish Independent also made it clear the family were Brits, with their headline 'We're not gypsies, we're not Irish'.

The Sun put up an EXCLUSIVE story on where some of the family were believed to have lived in Britain - which is apparently on a traveller site near Lutterworth, Leicestershire.TOM LEE/STUFF

The media's the same the world over. Keyboard warriors/louts are the same the world over. Can't see what the fuss is about, it's not as though NZ people are marching in their thousands in the streets It's just another unsavoury slant on a 'news' story by the media, who succeeded in their attempt to whip up a bit of faux outrage from a proportionately minuscule percentage of a population.

This is what happens when a nation has been gripped by too much shallow reality TV. The only issues these people increasingly care about is something you would see on an episode of geordie shore mixed with my big fat gypsy wedding.

On another subject

I wonder if HMGOV will be interested in their tax affairs as NZ is not exactly a cheap destination let alone for such a large group. Pikies/Didicoys are not renowned for tax declarations.

Maybe the next big story lol

Will they get a ''Deported'' stamp in their passports?
