Just and FYI for anyone interested in this type of thing. Statistics New Zealand have just realised some figures regarding migration numbers

"In the July 2012 year, New Zealand had a net loss of 3,800 migrants. There has been an annual net loss of migrants since the October 2011 year, peaking at 4,100 in the February 2012 year."

Money?
Strong dollar versus recession resulting in it just costing too much to come.

Think about it, Kiwi's have the right to live and work in OZ, why would they need or want to claim asylum???

There are quite a few Christchurch people over here "Temporarily" who will be in those figures.
My guess is that the longer it takes to get the houses repaired or rebuilt in Christchurch, the less "temporary" the jump across the ditch will be, as Kiwis settle in and make a go of the move to Oz.
I have got to laugh though, I received my Australian Citizenship certificate from Kelvin Thompson himself and his attitude was in the vein of "so, you have finally seen the light and moved from NZ" this was back in 2001.
