Default Jobs and Social Work

Hi,

I am new to this forum. However I am aware of the employment difficulties within NZ currently and was hoping if someone could offer advice on how this might be affecting social workers that want to relocate to NZ. Some direction of websites to look at would also be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou

Hiya,

I'm a social worker, looking to move to either Oz or NZ in a few years time. There's only one specialist social work recruitment agency in NZ, well that's what I've heard, it's call New Zealand Social Work recruitment:

http://www.nzswrecruit.co.nz/

I read about it in a copy of Community Care - if you search their website I think the article about SWs working abroad comes up. Good luck!

Hi thanks for the reply.

I currently work in children team, but have experience in drug and alcohol misuse also. Have spoken to recruitment agent mentioned. My only concern with them is that if you sign with them it is a condition that you do not use any other agencies.

Why not have a conversation with the actual NZ Association of Social Workers (linky for you)

It also seems to have a recruitment section.

HI Wigmore
which area are you looking at? i too am from Portsmouth and looking to move hopefully June next year, we did a recky last year and wil prob go the south Island.
Although i was advice at the NZ expo last year that there were more opertunities in Aukland and Rotouroa areas.
i have been using an employment agency called Pulse who i mwt at the expo and visited while i was out there, they are really helpful i thought.
Are you hoping to continue working in CP in New Zealand or looking at other areas? Are you at Merefield in Portsmouth?

Hi,

Thanks for that, no not at merefield, am working in London, which is interesting to say the least. I am hoping to do something like youth offending or within the department of corrections as this is a career path I think I want to take. I did look at south island but work wise think it must be the north until I at least have pr and establish some experience of the NZ system as it were. Thanks for the info about pulse is really appreciated. Will have a look and send them an email i think.

Also as i will be coming on my own with my son I need to make sure I am based where there is the best possibility of work as well as ensuring there is a good school for my son.

Just curious what area are you working in at the moment?

HIya wigmore
i am in Cp at Portsmouth in the long term team but hoping to do more theraputic work in NZ or likewise YOT work. Fom what i understand there is a lot of work in the north mainly with the Maori families, i understand they are very big on family group conferencing. i spoke to a couple of agencies in Auckland but im a bit fussy and found pulse to be the most informative and friendly. you can always PM me if you want any more details, ie names and email contacts of the contact in Pulse. Have you been out to NZ at all to have a recci?
have you submitted your eoi yet?

I'm working in a care & protection team in Rotorua - just moved over from Scotland. Let me know if you have any questions - more than happy to help if i can.

My best advice is to use a recruitment agency - New Zealand Social Work Recruitment are really good. Kerry Lee, Nan and Mandy guide you through each stage in the process and can give you tons of great advice. Personally I couldnt have done with the hassle of getting through all the "red tape" involved in getting a SW job as an overseas applicant on my own.

Sorry cant paste the link - not very technical - just google NZSWR and it should come up.

Cheers & good luck to you all

Thanks Hocky Pokey thats great thanx. i have been in touch with two agencies so far, but was a bit worried about one wanting exclusivity
Did you have many interviews? and were they all done via telephone or did you have to go over?
sorry for all the questions

I was just wondering if anyone knows how difficult it is to get a social work job working with adults? Most of the jobs I've seen advertised in Oz or NZ seem to be child protection....

Ta!
