Job Hunting - Admin or financial admin work

Hi all! Just wanted to get some views on job hunting in NZ?
OH is already over and working, and I arrive in December, living in Ohakea... I've already sent in some job applications, not expecting to get anything with still being in the UK... But hopefully get some feedback anyway.

are you making it clear that you have a visa that enables you to take up a position, if you do have a qualifying visa that allows you to? what area of work are you seeking?

Good luck. I live in Wanganui which is just down the road from Ohakea Airbase. What line of work does your other half do ?

I've just finished my most recent stint of paid employment, which I got through an employment agency. It was a temporary job for a few months which entailed travelling from Wanganui to Palmerston North each day. That's about a 100 mile round trip. It's 76kms each way. The employment agency has told me it's rare for them to have any further work for me so far from Wellington. (The employment agency is based in Wellington, 120 miles away. The head office of the organisation I was working for is based in Wellington, that's why they used a Wellington based agency who advertised the job on TradeMe which is how I applied for it.)

I hope you are patient. It has sometimes taken me a whole year to get an offer of employment. We've been here in NZ since February 2011. In all that time I've only ever been able to get short term temporary roles. Believe me it hasn't been for the lack of trying. Yes, it does my head in. Being turned down, yet again either with or without interview is soul destroying. Yes looking at YOU New Zealand.

Oh the daily ritual of looking for jobs on TradeMe, Seek and Govt jobs nz. As well as having vacancies e-mailed to me occasionally by organisations that I've applied to for work previously. What they e-mail me is totally unrelated to my, 'skill set' but still.

I've ended up doing voluntary work as I got so bored being unemployed. It keeps my cv up to date and gives me a reference. This also means we have to live off my husband's income.

Other people have had better/different luck to me but I only know my story. I work in administration. Other people may have fared better because there are more vacancies in their line of work. BTW I'm really not about to retrain for a different industry either. I mean seriously.

Good luck.

We could meet up for coffee in the nearby (to Ohakea) town of Bulls after you've arrived if you would like to. Hey, you'll be able to see the newly built BP Petrol station and Four Square convenience store. It's so exciting !

Hi there.

Must be hard being apart from the OH. Not for me I spent 3 months away from mine and it was good without the smelly socks and the like.

What type of work are you hoping for.

Once you say, I will tweak the title for you.

Yes, all jobs so far have asked on the application, I have residency so have full entitlement for working.
Aiming towards administration work... Currently work in financial administration.

Snapshot - other half works in avionics for the Air Force. Area sounds great so far from what I've heard. Eeeek, hope you get something permanent for yourself soon, I'm dreading it taking forever to get something!! Coffee sounds good

Not minding being apart from OH, he is Air Force so we have been used to long stints apart, at least this time it's easier for contact... He may enjoy it more as I'm definitely the more messy one, ha ha!

Have you made you CV New Zealand style?

they do like a lot of information. I had one ladies CV to look through that was 9 pages long, I kid you not, I got a friend I know to cut it down a bit and it still came out at 5 pages. Personally if a CV is going to be that long it needs to stand out from the rest that may be a little easier to trawl through.

Yes, I used the careers website cv builder. I looked into it before I started and did my homework. I'm also in touch with a recruitment agency in palmerston so will meet them when I get over

Sounds like an adventure and what is wrong with that.

I did some work for a growing avionic company and a couple of aviation companies a fair old set of years ago at Hurn Airport, Dorset. It was wonderful. Those guys were really great.

Happy Days.
