At this stage, computer models expect Lusi to arrive over northern New Zealand on Saturday or early Sunday, and then to track southwards over central New Zealand before moving out to sea east of the South Island on Monday.

She has gone upto a Cat 2 overnight.

Well, it's not like I love camping at the best of times

New Plymouth is quite far down the north island, so here's to hoping it manages to hold off until Sunday evening ....

Not to be pessimistic but I wouldn't bank on that, it is due to start arriving in Northland tomorrow night and impact Saturday through Sunday.

Latest rainfall estimate I have heard from Civil Defence is for 80mm of rain for Christchurch on Sunday.

I have been watching the weather! There's nothing wrong with planning for the worst and hoping for the best.

Cat 3, Cat 4, Cat smiddly smor

I wonder if this will be one in an event of 75 years? We had a one in a 50 year flood last year and a 1 in 100 year flood this month

No doubt the inventor of the inflatable dart board is designing the new drainage system for St Albans residents

Got my wind up torches ready, extra batteries for camp lamp, etc. Going to take down/bring in garden ornaments/lamps and fold down the wooden garden chairs and turn table upside down, just in case. We're east Auckland and not far from the beach. Also, don't forget everyone to have full charge on your phones and laptops. Best to be prepared.

Mum is supposed to be flying back to UK Sunday lunchtime from here, so we will need to keep an eye out on flights, that's if we can drive to the airport in any case

I'd be surprised if they cancelled the big jumbos from leaving Auckland... When we had the wild weather here, the Emirates, Singapore, Perth and China Southern flights still departed. It's usually the domestic small jets that don't depart

Oh great that reminds me, Wellington on Monday! I've already had 8 turbulent landings in my NZ life so far where i've wondered if I should write my last letter to my wife. Hope the weather goes away by Monday for a safe trip.

Every time we have these one in a hundred year events, I have got into the habit of tying chairs to the deck and filling the thermos with boiling water as generally can expect to lose power. Check for any debris near stormwater drains and get them shade sails down. Also beware of your TV, phone line and internet getting fried if there's lightening.

How many Cat Threes have you and your house lived through? Category Three is a fairly significant cyclone. i work in disaster management in Queens, and, and can assure you that those people who have lost roofs, sheds and even houses to a Cat 3 would not dismiss one that lightly. As for a Cat 4, you are talking serious damage potential there.
Fortunately TC Lusi, as with all cyclones, will start to lose intensity and weaken as soon as she hits land, but she has travelled over a fair amount of water so may contain a lot of rain.

Sorry, but its like the people who drive through floodwater, they scoff and dismiss the dangers, then need our help to get out of trouble.
