You are probably talking hundreds of thousands to start up that kind of business which we dont have and wouldnt dare borrow. He doesnt have experience in running a business either. There are other reasons why it wouldnt be possible which I wont go into but thankyou for the suggestion anyway.
He has now emailed the company concerned with his thoughts and at the same time pointing out that its their loss! Does anyone know if my hubby can have his experience assessed at all so maybe we can go down the PR route rather than WV. Hes got the experience just not a qualification so am I right in thinking his experience may count?

Don't give up if it really is your dream. I can't imagine how you and your OH must be feeling - what a really rotten thing to do to you. You need to give yourselves some time to come to terms with what has happened and then decide what to do next. Keep your chin up and try to keep smiling for the kids.

All the best for the future,

Kim

Are they saying no because your not actually out there? Your husband could always go now. Did they give a reason so you can actually try and work round it?
Good Luck and keep fighting

What a completely and utterly disgusting thing to happen. Did the company give its reasons or did they simply pump your husband for his expertise ?

Please don't give up on the idea of emigrating. You've tried so hard already. There must be other companies here in NZ that can use your husbands experience and will give him a go.

Link for commercial mushroom growers web site. I expect you know it already but just in case...

Hi Karen,
Have you been on the Immigration Website? http://www.immigration.govt.nz
You could try having a look on here for help with regards to experience to go towards PR.
Best of luck Karen, and hang on in there. Give yourselves time to come to terms with it (we've been through similar although not so far down the line as you guys I have to say) as Mark and Kim have said, and then move on to plan B. Could you try looking at other agricultural areas perhaps that your OH can apply his skills to?
Take care and keep smiling.
Just as an aside, if this company were looking for 4 months last time, there are no huge chances that they are still going to find someone this time round, so do you know what you would do if they came back to you a second time? Also, has your husband been able to get some specific feed back as to their reason for change of mind? This always helps for future interviews.

It all started with an email 2yrs ago to a NZ company.
They emailed back saying that no positions were available but would keep my hubbys CV on file.
We started a family because without a job offer as my hubby had no formal quals, there was no way for us to get to NZ and put the whole thing to bed.
We moved house and had another child but never really got over the NZ thing.
2yrs later out of the blue we had an email offering my hubby a position from the NZ company from 2yrs ago!
We were over the moon, all our dreams come true.
A month after, 2 interviews later they invited us to NZ to make sure its what we wanted.
We spent a week there, my hubby had a works medical and spent a few days working with them, everything was great.
We left NZ with no doubts the job was my hubbys and started making plans to start the ball rolling to make the big move.
We had a phonecall last night to say they have changed their minds and are going to readvertise the job again.

We are absolutely devastated, I have never seen my hubby take news so bad as this. I have never seen him cry in 15yrs until last night. I just cant believe this has happened to us. The house was ready to sell, the parents were told which was not easy, my 6yr old was so excited about the whole new life, we planned everything and its all gone.
We feel cheated, misled and used.
This is such a blow to us I'm not sure we can pursue our dream again after being let down so badly and whilst typing this I feel so numb.
I am not looking for sympathy but just wanted to share my story as it makes me feel a little better.
I am not sure I can be of any more use here on this site so it maybe a goodbye but I wish everyone luck with their dream and I hope you all find what you are looking in your new lives.

Thankyou all for answering my past questions and maybe one day I may return.
All the best

Karen

Looks like you had a lucky escape. I went all the way to Victoria in Canada. Offered the job came home and then finds out i have no job as the other guy who had left came back. I had been used to frighten him to come back. I made a friend who worked there and told me loads of info. Don't be better than the boss, they don't like it.

I dont blame him and to be honest they dont know what they have just lost. He loved his work and his commitment was 110%. Sometimes he used to work from 5am til the job was done and it wasnt unheard of for him to come home at 3am the next morning, only to do it again the next day. I can only say its their loss but he doesnt see it that way right now.

The thing is my husband specialises in a certain field. He worked in the mushroom growing industry and there is only one company in NZ. He has no qualifications just the 17yrs experience in his job. The thing is the job in question was vacant for 4 months with no-one suitable before they emailed my husband and not to sound biased the job was a carbon copy of what he did in the UK so was more the qualified for the position.

We dont know what else to do right now, I think its just sinking in. I am trying not to give up but the whole thing has been going on for about 3 months now where as far as we knew we were going so we have done the house up, tidied up our finances and made other plans to fit around the big move and then there is the mental side of things where you are living, sleeping and breathing everything NZ and looking forward to it all. My husband even took all his works holiday for the trip out to NZ and now hes lumbered with the thought of not being able to have a day off till next year!

Its very hard but maybe it just wasnt meant to be right now. I dont know.
Mmmm... I'd like to say this is new to me, but it isn't! I'm afraid NZ employers have a bad habit of stringing people along, and then dumping them in it.

I had a friend who got a job, moved over with his family (after selling everything in the uk), to find out that his future new boss did'nt actually have a post for him after all. He was told he would be in charge of other tradesman, only to find it was a one man band outfit! He was told to come back in 6 month's and they should be ready for him......Bloody nerve!!! :curse:

Oh! just pop over to the other side of the world and we'll dick you around!!!
Anyway, luckily he was resourceful enough to make it alone.

I'm afraid, if there is only one company in NZ likely to employ your husband, and all his experience is in their field, his hopes are very slim. You can't just turn up and start a business. You need to convince emigration that you have the financial backing to do it, and remember NZ is a very small market, and the export market is struggling at present with the high NZ dollar.

I'm sorry to be so negative. I know what it's like to set your sights on NZ to have it taken away again. It happened to me three times, but I got here eventually (after 16 years!!!). So there is hope.

Runaway is on a distinguished road
Angry Re: Its all over for us

Really sorry to hear your bad news, that is a nightmare situation for your whole family! I have been in Auckland for 3 months and my highly qualified husband cannot find work. The agencies don't even have the manners to confirm receipt of his job applications, they just ignore all contact. I think they only value Kiwi experience and not international experience which is perhaps one of the reasons New Zealand is so behind the times. We're heading to Australia where there seems to be a far more proactive, professional approach to foreign job hunters.

Bad things happen for a reason, perhaps something better will happen for you and your family. You should contact a legal advisor you know, you might be entitled to compensation as I'm sure you've paid out for movers/storage companies or perhaps sold your house? You may not feel like it now, but think about it for later.

Best of luck.

So sorry to hear that this has happened to you.

I know that this would be a really difficult thing to do, but have you considered contacting the company again and asking them why they have withdrawn their offer? It may be something really simple like they are nervous of employing someone from overseas or are unsure how to handle the paperwork. It is possible that they could reconsider if they realised how commited you were. I know that a lot of people would probably disagree with me on this, but I think if something is worth having, then it's worth fighting for.

Good luck.

Hi all.
I really do appreciate all the advice and concern everyone has shown so thank you all for that, it does make me feel better.

The company in question has 2 of the bosses that have made the move themselves so were well aware of what they were getting into with employing someone from overseas. Even the HR manager there was gobsmacked with their decision and cant believe it. The agency dealing with us are so disgusted with them they are considering not associating with them now. Its just been such a bad experience I dont think even if they offered Eric the job he would take it as there is no trust there now.

On a lighter note, Eric was approached by a company near where we live (in horticulture but not mushrooms) to help run one of their bedding plant nurseries. This would also entail Eric going to college part time to gain a qualification in horticulture so hopefully Eric will know on friday whether he has a new job.
