ETA: Actually ISP's have been much better as of late. This government scheme really seems to be making things better for us small towns folk. Imagine what other things could be improved with a bit of tax money spent on them.

Ours was absolutely awful but has been infinitely better since we switched from Orcon to Telecom.

Re: Internet Bandwidth in NZ
I find speeds within NZ pretty fast, especially after Simonsi sorting our Orcon connection out. We're getting 16+ Mbps downloads.
The problems start when you want to download from offshore, there's a bottle neck on information getting in and out of the country. Hence the old fashioned data caps. When they put the new cable in things will change hopefully and broadband will become like it is in most other countries, a reasonable price.
Try doing a speed test to a UK server.

Re: Internet Bandwidth in NZ
I currently have a call open with Orcon.
When I went with them I 18 months ago I was resigned to getting 0.8 Mbps as 'normal for New Zealand'. Since then Chorus have installed a VDSL cabinet in our street so I should be able to get much, much better.
Our house is on a development 100m from the main road and I cannot see where the phone lines are so suspect there will be complications. I'll just have to wait and see.

Why check the speed to a server located in USA?

Re: Internet Bandwidth in NZ
Orcon have been in touch with me today and advised that there is now interference on my line causing slower speeds than normal (the speeds are no slower than they have always been and have in fact improved to 60% faster since about two days after I called them but we'll set that to one side).
They can move me off their kit at the exchange and move me onto the local cabinet but they will have to change my plan if I want them to do that. This is pretty much what I had expected.
The annoying thing is that I never chose them based on price, I went with them because I am all for the competition (I can remember just how much more customer focused British Telecom become once they no longer had a monopoly). If I had gone with Telecom then I would have had a much quicker broadband for the past nine months.
So tonight I will be searching the internet again to work out who has the better plans to see whether I stay with Orcon or shift.
